Here's how the NLT translates that verse:
For instance, Sarah obeyed her husband, Abraham, and called him her master. You are her daughters when you do what is right without fear of what your husbands might do.

Without looking at any more context than this, according to this translation it seems as though it would mean that women are to obey God, or do the Godly thing, even if it means going against what they husbands think.

Interesting verse though. I might have to study that a little myself.

1 and 2 Peter are awesome books. Get kinda deep!

IF and AS LONG AS and WHEN are big words. That is the problem I am facing, why would He have Peter use this????

Someone with an better under standing of the Greek language would really help.

Because it sounds like he is stating here to me:

As long as she does what is right, she will be daughters of Sarah.

Verse 1: (NKJ)
Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives.

Sounds like kind of the same thing. That by acting always in a Godly manor, or doing what is right, they might by their conduct, win their husbands over to the Lord.

My thought is:  There are a few verses in the Bible that give us pause. This is one of those verses that would seem to be saying that there is a chance that you could not be a "child of Abraham or daughter of Sarah" if you do not conduct yourselves properly. There are many people who say that they are saved but do not live as they are saved.  James says that he proves his faith by his works.  His works are evidence of his faith.  The same principle applies here.  If you are submissive willingly to your husband and not by force (fear and terror) this shows the evidence of Christ in your life.  "Let this mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus...who was obedient unto death even the death on the cross."
A lot of people seem to think that they can behave any way they want and God will forgive them.  Those who have been born of God do not want to sin, or continue in sin, even if they fall into sin, but have a sincere desire to do what is right and to please God in every aspect of their life. And yes, this flys in the face of American Woman dominated culture, but to disrespect your husband is sin.

the greek:

G15
ἀγαθοποιέω
agathopoieō
ag-ath-op-oy-eh'-o
From G17; to be a well-doer (as a favor or a duty): - (when) do good (well).

Michael, sounds good, but ?????

Todd, this one seems to fit, an evidence or fruit...? but again.... sounds like ??

I just can't wrap my brain around this one... but Todd's seems to fit correctly with the rest of the Word...... will have to keep praying on this one...

Galtians 4:21-30 is a passage that I was reminded of while thinking on this verse for what it's worth.

i read, and re-read the passage, but the only thing I can find resembling the issue, is when he says to cast out the bond woman,

help me see what you are seeing??

I think maybe I am on a completely different train of thought than you. which is not unusual for me:) I can be in left field sometimes!

But what I thought you were thinking was that the term "if you do well" was implying a works mentality. Like only by the works could you be a true child of Abraham.

The passage in Galatians talks about how those that are of the flesh, or of a works or law mentality, are in fact really children of Hagar. But those that believe in the gospel and receive salvation as a gift are in fact children of Abraham and heirs of the promise. In other words saved by grace without self-effort. Sons and daughters of the "free" woman. That's the correlation I was referring to.

Sorry Gary if I have side-tracked your whole train of thought. I may be way out of my league here but I found the subject to be interesting and wanted to participate.

I am hoping others will chime in. It will be interesting to hear their interpretations.

no, not at all, but that is what it seems to say.....

as long as she does right??? that sounds like if she does wrong she would not be a daughter of sarah....???

that is why I am stuck on this one !!!   arg!!!

ok, more on this:

1Ti 2:15  Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety

saved=

G4982
σώζω
sōzō
sode'-zo
From a primary word σῶς sōs̄ (contraction for the obsolete σάος saos, “safe”); to save, that is, deliver or protect (literally or figuratively): - heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.

and here, Paul uses the Law for women, but men under grace???

1Co 14:34  Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

and here: good works

1Ti 2:9  In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
1Ti 2:10  But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

works again:

1Ti 5:10  Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.

so, is this a cultural issue? The Lord does not change, so I am stuck on 1st Peter 3:6

arg....

Lord help me understand!!!!

"whose children ye now are, if ye do well, ..."
What that means is, if you follow her example. In other words, you [ladies] are acting as true spiritual offspring if you follow Sarah`s example of humility & obedience. T

1 Pet 3:16 "...if thou doest well..."   Gary, here is another way of putting it -  "...if you do what is right  [and follow her godly example]..."

I hope that helps! T
