A month ot two ago, in a previous blog, I mentioned that my friend Tish and I were planning to get tattoos to celebrate our 40th birthdays (we are seperated in age by 5 days). Well, this past saturday, we both got some new ink.
For the past 15 years, I have had a tattoo on my left shoulder of Mickey Mouse holding a mug of beer. When I first got it, I thought it was cool because I was a heavy drinker. When I quit drinking in 2002, I became very embarrassed of it. I felt like it symbolized my old life style. I even stopped wearing tank tops because I didn't want anyone seeing it (it's high enough on my shoulder that a short sleeve shirt covers it).
My original intention was to cover the entire tattoo with something Christian. The tattoo artist suggested that I just cover the mug of beer with a bible. I loved the idea, so that's exactly what I did. Now Mickey is holding a bible instead of a beer!
But I didn't stop there. On my right shoulder, I got a midevil type shield, with a cross in the middle. Down the long part of the cross is the word "Faith" in red. Across is "EPH 6:16" in black. I think it looks great and have gotten a lot of good feedback on it.
In case you're wondering, Ephesians 6:16 reads ..... "In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one". Tish got a heart with a cross inside, with wings that wrap around on her ankle. I felt so bad because she was in so much pain. Apparently, the ankle is one of the most painful places to get a tattoo. If you don't believe me, just ask her. She told me that she came close to passing out several times from the pain. Her face was ghost white the entire time, but being the trooper that she is, she gutted it out and got through it. I'm proud of her.
Mine hurt worse than I remembered from my previous one, but I knew that it wasn't as bad as hers, so I gritted my teeth and didn't complain. I had to "man up" so I wouldn't look like a wimp in front of her. In the end, the pain was worth it because I love how it looks.
Tish, if you read this, thank you for doing this with me. I'm sorry it hurt so bad. You're a great friend and I'm so glad I was able to celebrate this milestone birthday with you. We now have a permanent reminder of how we celebrated our 40th birthdays.
Take care and God Bless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jeff H aka Hutch |
