Ecclesiastes Ch. 4
Thank you for returning, I pray you all had a wonderful weekend! Lets go to the Lord in prayer...
Prayer: Father, thank you again Lord for the beautiful day you have given to us. Thank you for supplying all of our needs. Thank you for being a rock and a safety net that we can run to. Thank you for your salvation and grace that you extended for us. Father, we love you Lord. We come together to simply grow and learn more about you. I ask that you lead and guide this time and put a hedge of protection around us. Bring your truth and light in to our lives. Through the blood of Jesus we pray these things. Amen.
In the Hebrew Bible, the book of Ecclesiastes is called "Qoheleth" (Koheleth) which means "preacher". The term suggests one who speaks to a gathering of people. The term has also been translated to "Ekklesiastes" which also means "preacher". The combination of the two definitions is to "preach to the assembly". Ecclesiastes is a wonderful melancholy book filled with living truths for daily life.
"Vanity" is a key word used in the book of Ecclesiastes. Vanity is mentioned 35 times in 29 verses. Vanity means "uselessness, nothingness". Another key area in this book is the phrase "under the sun". This phrase is mentioned 29 times in 27 verses. The suggested message of vanity is true when one looks at life purely from a worldly perspective. Without a relationship with God, life is vanity.
Chapter 4 covers more truths to those of us who have been through a life trauma.
4:1 Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and, behold, the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter. 4:2 Wherefore I praised the dead that have been long dead more than the living that are yet alive; The teacher of Ecclesiastes, often thought of as Solomon, continues to point out the depravity in this fallen world. He mentions being a victim in verse 1 (NLT).
NLT; vs 1: "Again I observed all the oppression that takes place in our world. I saw the tears of the oppressed, with no one to comfort them. The oppressors have great power, and the victims are helpless."
Many of us in this study can relate to the life of victimization. From being lied to to abused, we have endured many trials. Personally, I am so thankful we have truth and hope in Jesus. How lost I would be without Him!
4:3 yea, better than them both `did I esteem' him that hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun. 4:4 Then I saw all labor and every skilful work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. 4:5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh. 4:6 Better is a handful, with quietness, than two handfuls with labor and striving after wind.
Talk about trying to 'keep up with the Jones'. many people struggle to meet their bills and feed their family, then multiplied ontop of that is the desire to have all that the world says you must have. This stress in life adds to the tension in our homes. Having strife in our homes is not of God. A peaceful home is a refuge for your family.
The next verses show the advantages of companionship. Many of us are divorced or single, keep in mind...God has a plan for you as He says in Jeremiah 29:11.
4:7 Then I returned and saw vanity under the sun. 4:8 There is one that is alone, and he hath not a second; yea, he hath neither son nor brother; yet is there no end of all his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches. For whom then, `saith he', do I labor, and deprive my soul of good? This also is vanity, yea, it is a sore travail. 4:9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 4:10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him that is alone when he falleth, and hath not another to lift him up. 4:11 Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one be warm `alone'? 4:12 And if a man prevail against him that is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
Lastly, the following verses give us insight into the needed authority of wisdom in our lives. It also addresses the futility of political power. Trusting in God does not mean God does not provide avenues here on this earth for us to use...such as a lawyer, doctor; however the trust is not in man, it is in the One who created man.
4:13 Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king, who knoweth not how to receive admonition any more. 4:14 For out of prison he came forth to be king; yea, even in his kingdom he was born poor. 4:15 I saw all the living that walk under the sun, that they were with the youth, the second, that stood up in his stead. 4:16 There was no end of all the people, even of all them over whom he was: yet they that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
Prayer: Father, thankyou that you are the solid rock we have in this world. Father, you are so gracious and wonderful to us. Thank you for providing a life manual with the Bible as we walk through this world. May we be a light unto others for you.
Thank you for joining us, see you tomorrow.
Much love~

| Amen to that Ruth! When a braid is made it is interwoven with three cords. Two pieces could quickly spin and unravel...Three sets a binding agent in it. |

| This is awesome indeed. I pray that you continue to allow God to use you as a vessel of wisdom and purpose. |
