Cool post.  It's true that we need to watch and work on what we say.  As someone who used to curse like a sailor (no offense to the sailors out there),  I still find that I struggle with falling back into things like that when driving or smashing a thumb or something...

I know that you also are talking about full-on conversations and interactions with folks, and I agree there too.  I think one added 'issue' I have is that I think too much about how I will be perceived if I don't 'get it just right' when talking to someone, but I need to let it go and let the Spirit speak through me.  I'm just the squawk-box, as I like to say  :)

our words can give life, but they can also bring death. He created the heavens and the earth with His words, and we are created in His image.

So many people don't realize this! When meeting someone for the first time, their impression of you comes mainly from what you say and how you act.

You are so right! and there is power in what we or others speak over ppl.  I just found out that one of the nursery workers went to my husband and told him our son was "bad." I've never called him that.  Jokingly, I've called him a "good boy who occassionally chooses to do bad things."  I won't call him a brat, unless i decide that's what I want.  I know that isn't the main key of what you are saying, but I just wanted to add that to it.  Awesome blog, as always.  Glory to God.

Jesus simply spoke to the fig tree,

Mat 21:19  And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

what we say is very important, also:

Mat 12:36  But I say unto you, That every idle word that men (including us Christians) shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

So true. My problem tends to be more tone than content. Sarcasm used to be a way of life for me but in Christ it is not beneficial. As I heard a preacher say once, no one can tame the tongue but it can be disciplined.

Before becoming a Christian, I used to think that people who spiced their conversations with an "Amen to that" or a "Praise God!), were a little on the weird side.  After becoming a Christian I found myself saying a few things like that!  It's catchy!  But it's more than merely catchy trend!  When it becomes sincere, it tells others where your heart is.  It provides witness to others as to where your confidence lies, for "I am not ashamed of the gospel" (Romans 1:16).

This is the third blog I've read throughout the day that deals on the same issue of the tongue, and I kind of flipped over from reading Cheryls blog that pointed in your direction.  Thanks David for your words of wisdom.  I think the man "upstairs" is trying to say someting, don't you?  The words that come out of our mouth can breathe life or death into someone.  Catch up with you whenever my friend.

"What goes into a man's mouth doesn't make him unclean; it's what comes OUT of the mouth that makes him unclean" Mat 15:11

We also have the power to bless and to curse with our mouths. As Lara basically says above, you don't want to be cursing someone with "bad" or "brat". I like her description of a "good boy who occassionally chooses to do bad things." That puts the focus on how things really are.

We also need to be careful about the words that we use to curse or describe ourselves. I am concerned about Christians who describe themselves as [forgiven] sinners. Is that really what you want to be; what you want to declare yourself to be? Better to focus on the truth that you are a child of God and declare that!

Yes, by all means let's "speak life" to others, God will listen and do whatever we ask right?  That ten year old boy with cancer, let's just all "speak life" to him.  Oops, it didn't work.  Someone must have doubted.

Or, let's all "speak" a new job, or a new car for ourselves.  Or, let's all forget we are sinners saved by our Lord bleeding and suffocating to death so we wouldn't have to die for eternity..   Yes, that's the Biblical way to live.

Sorry, I don't buy it.  I've seen "christians" acting like everything is ok, and we wonder why the world doesn't take us seriously.  God will do what God will do.  It doesn't matter what you think, or what you want folks!  Come on!

Certainly be Christlike to each other, but don't be fooled by this "power of speach" lie that makes us look foolish, and accomplishes nothing except to make us feel better about ourselves.  Christianity involves suffering.  Loving others involves suffering.  If you are not suffering you may not be a christian.

Hey thanks for this posting! i am going to the jail to minister tomorrow night, and this is the message i am prepared to take in! I see this as a confirmation, i just read today about our words being either words of life or of death in Proverbs 18. Have a blessed weekend!

Looks like two extreme sides are suggested here, so I'll offer the balance.

On the one hand it is true that the words we use have an impact on our demeanor, attitude, and how we relate to others.  Words can get us into trouble in that spreading lies can devour one's career, ministry, family, community, or an entire country (cf. James 3).  If anyone doubts the negative power of words, try telling your wife that those pants do make her butt look big!  Conversely, speaking things positively, affirmatively, gently, and lovingly can certainly exhort others and lift them up. This seems to be the heart of David's original message that we could all agree to.  But there are other features of his blog that seem to treat speaking such words as though they are incantations that can harness certain forces in the world to succomb to our demands.

On the other hand, we have the more obscure and controversial "You will be amazed at how God partners with power with your conversations. For there is life and death in the content of your words and out of your mouth flow the issues of life. God wants so much for us and it is not his will that we struggle in our relationships. So we must make our words our ally and with intention speak life and love!"  This leads to the cynical reaction given by Paul just above me.  Paul's concern is that this kind of thinking is a lie, that it's foolish, and that we are ultimately called to suffer (where our very Christianity seems to depend on it).  Again, there is a nugget of truth here that we should all affirm - but it, too, is an extreme view (particularly this latter point).

The balance:  Yes, words do psychologically impact ourselves and each other.  We can harm with a curse or uplift with a blessing.  But the Bible does not make a case for speaking such words so that the external world is somehow altered by the utterance of those words (like an incantation).  That words have an inherent or "God-endowed" power to augment or diminish nature is anything but biblical.  References to "and God said Let there be ..." are not indications that speech is a means for altering reality.  Rather, the Old Testament writers use this colloquial device to delineate how creation is effortless for God.  We do this today when we say things like, "All you have to do is give the word, and it's done!"  We don't mean that words mysteriously create or alter reality, but that carrying out the demand is without restraint.  Now, must a Christian experience suffering to be a Christian?  This, too, is nonbiblical.  The condition for one's salvation is confessing Jesus' divinity and affirming His resurrection from the dead (cf. Romans 10:9-10).  The reality is, not all Christians will suffer (at least not suffer in the same way).  Comparatively, the first few centuries of Christianity witnessed quite a bit of martyrdom for the early church.  I dare say most living in the United States have never and will never have to undergo such an ordeal.  I find no precedent for thinking that my lack of being fed to the lions in the colosseum or living an impoverished life compared to third-world countries is somehow a damnable offense.

We have to be in His timing, not everyone was healed that was alive during Christ's time, We have to be sensitive to the Holy Spririt, else we are in the flesh, and in the fleash will result in failure, or attack by the enemy, like the seven son's of Sceva. As to speaking to alter or affect nature, no, it is not an incantation, as this is witchcraft, but when moved by the Spririt we can tell a fig tree to not grow anymore fruit because it is barren, and it will wither and die. For Christ said that the things He did and many more will we do, but in all things, it has to be acording to the will of the Lord.

S L,
Thank you for a very well balanced and thoughful response.  I would make one thing clear here, I do not believe you must suffer in order to be a christian, but that suffering is a sign, or proof that you are one.  The notion that one will never suffer if he is a christian is not Biblical, in fact the opposite is true, we are more likely to suffer if we are a christian.

We are lulled into a false sense of security, because when the persecution does start here, many will flee from the Way. There is a great surge from the enemy to dilute the truth. An so many have followed this other teaching of Christ, giving away their inheritance.
