| TOTALED!! |
|
| |

A couple of Saturdays ago, I received a phone call from my wife that froze the blood in my veins: “We just had an accident, your truck is totaled!” Laura’s voice was shaky as she informed me that she (and our daughter) had hit another car.
"WHAT????" I shrieked into the phone! I was momentarily traumatized by dramatic images in my head of twisted metal spattered with the blood of my loved ones. So much for the peace of the Spirit in me, I suppose!!
She quickly put my mind at ease, responding that they were ok, but stuck at the accident scene and needing a ride home.
Immediately, I grabbed our two younger children and we sped off to get our “girls” (who are fine, no significant injuries praise God!!!!). On the way there all three of us prayed together as we fought through tears of uncertainty, worry, and for me, the revelation that the comfortable life can indeed end in an instant, any instant of God’s choosing.
Once we arrived and made sure everyone was safe and unhurt, we quickly started seeing a positive side. Mainly, no serious injuries. Plus, the accident occurred just 2 days before I was to leave for a week on a business trip, a week in which we wouldn’t need the truck anyway! Also, it happened just 2 miles from my dad’s house, and he was able to come right away and offer comfort and assistance. And finally, the accident was not Laura’s fault (legally speaking)!
Through this unfortunate event, God reinforced in us a deep appreciation that he can intervene in our lives on any day, at any time and in any manner of his choosing. And it may not be to bless us either, at least not in a way we easily understand!! And the biggest lesson for us? We were all reminded just how precious (and precarious) life is. Not just the good life either, but simply life! To be able to walk, talk, breathe, smile, play, and love, is a gift of inestimable worth!! We are now more determined than ever to enjoy it while it is ours to enjoy.
LORD, thank you for allowing this to happen to us!!
ps… As a result of this accident, we spent a great deal of time last week car shopping. Car salesmen are truly a unique breed of people. Not the most pleasant week of my life, that is for sure!! All the car shopping also made it nearly impossible for me to spend any time on my favorite website...

Mike, Had a drunk driver hit us at 8:00am one Sunday morning and totaled our car. Your post just reminded me that the Lord has watched over us and continues to do so. I am so thankful that the "girls" are okay. Praise the Lord for you and Laura. This sight has been such a blessing. |

Praise God that everyone is OK.....
Life is so precious and we take so much of it for granted... I was thinking along the same lines the other day with everything that is going on right now in this country and everyone's lives. Gas Prices, Food prices, Presidential messes, etc, etc, etc. But God has a way of opening our eyes to what is really significant, He is #1, our families, friends, love. All the rest of this stuff is just that STUFF..
Hug Laura and your daughter for me. |

Praise GOD. His will is amazing. I had wondered where you had gotten off to. The board has missed you. I have grown to depend on you for mature responses and this is no exception. Great lesson for the kids too.

Hey Jeremy, thanks!!!
Bhek...aw shucks. Hey, I've missed this place, now that the car situation is resolved we have a little more free time (just a little!)... Did ya see the comment I left on your page? :-)

Thank you Paul...and he did! :-) (and continues to!)
Mary, thanks, and yes many of us do -- including me! This was a wake up call to us.
Jerry...your post is an indication that, as far as accidents go, even though the Rodeo was "totaled", the accident was relatively minor. How bad would it have to be before we start finding it difficult to say "praise God" afterwards? Well, I suppose if there had been fatalities. BUT... there weren't, so I'm praisin him today!! For all I'm worth in fact! |

| Maureen....thank you so much for that comment, so nice! I miss my Rodeo very much!!! (Laura did not usually drive it, I did!) But I'm feeling strangely detached, as though the realization that cars are relatively unimportant has really taken root. Praise the Lord! |

Mike: Glad to hear you are all okay. Just out of curiosity, how is the car in the picture "totaled"? It looks to be in okay shape for repairs. I guess it must not have been worth it (to the insurance company) to have it fixed, right?
Isn't it funny that THEY won't incur the cost of repairing your car, yet, you'll be stuck with car payments for a number of years (provided, of course, you DON'T pay the car in full at purchase)? |

Grant...LOL (nope, not that bad!) Thanks Francine...it was a close call. Fortunately both "girls" had their seatbelts on! Yep, life is just full of lessons, isn't it? Actually, what good is anything that happens to us in life if we don't learn something from it? :-) Gio...yep, our insurance co. decided the costs to repair the truck were more than the truck was worth. Believe me, I would have preferred that they pay to fix the truck. I loved that truck, will miss it, and will also miss life w/o car payments...for at least the next 3 yrs. Thankfully the accident was relatively minor, though it's the worst one anybody in our family has yet been involved in. |

I'm sorry the accident happened...I don't believe that God causes bad things to happen to people (there's others involved in that, including our own bad decisions!) but I DO believe that God provides confort, encouragment and the ability to overcome these situations. Thanks for looking at the Godly side of things...your faith is an encouraging one. And thank God for the safety of your girls!!!
By the way, the last vehicle I bought I got from a retired farmer who had a small used car lot in front of his barn. What a pleasure to deal with this humble and godly man! And the Dakota wasn't bad, either! |

Thanks Ed!! And wow, wish I could've found a used lot like that! Oh, the used car salesmen we have around here. I could write an interesting blog about them! Like the Indian guy, "Alex", who called us no less than 3x after we called about a car on his lot -- we didn't even visit him!! Could never quite make out what he as even saying either. Or Mfon Mfon (yep, his first and last names are the same). Now that guy was a good salesman! Or "New York" (guy's nickname). What an experience! |

| I am so glad that everyone was ok. I have thought of this a lot...my husband travels a lot, and with all the problems with planes (even though it is still safer to fly than to drive), I worry that on one trip he might not come back. It is not a worry that I obsess over, but it is in the back of my mind. I just have to trust God to get me through whatever happens. And while my husband is home, I enjoy his presence more. |

Thank you Lara....hmm, dated car salesmen...well, you didn't date anyone like "New York", or Mfon Mfon! lol.. I'm serious, the characters we encountered! Oh, the worst must have been the Indian guy who kept calling us, he wouldn't leave us alone! And he didn't even have what we were looking for!! Ugh! Lara, I'm glad you have higher standards now!!! (you may have noticed, you touched a nerve, lol) ps... Mike isn't an ex-car salesman is he? Or current???? cella jean-- love you much, and THANK YOU for the concern! Wow - your gmom was fortunate! What timing! (God's timing is always perfect) Well thank you Patty! Yes, those car sales peo are weird indeed, most of them that is. I almost forgot, my father in law is an occasional car salesman. :-0 Thanks Pastor Elam! And Deb, don't worry - it's true, air travel is the safest mode! Statistically by far! But trains and buses aren't far behind. It's all those dang cars! Don't let your hubby drive!!! (just kidding) |

Mike. So glad your family is alright. As I read the comments it brought back a memory of an accident I had in college. I was driving home from New Brunswick, Canada in February. The weather was bad! I was young and thought I could out drive the storm! I had a car full (six of us) all wanting to get home for vacation. I slid on the road, around the curve, down a hill straight into a telephone poll (#321). We all walked away with minimum injuries. I remember how nervous (18 yrs old) I was to call my Dad. I knew from experience how he usually reacted...it wasn't good. This time as I called and told him I had an accident...he said "Is everyone alright?" After my response he said "That's all that matters. Cars can be replaced, you can't." I still cry when I think about this.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. |

Thanks Dave! Haven't seen you around much, everything ok? That's very sweet Jade, bless you sister! Rosie, many days I pray that prayer, in the morning, but thankfully God's grace covers us when I forget! Thanks for your concern, my (big) sister. :-) That's quite a story Robin! Your dad had his priorities straight back then, and it's cool that it made such a good impression on you. I can't even imagine how I would have felt if I had to make a call like that one!! My dad was pretty understanding too, but he had his limits!! |

Hey Mike, I am glad to hear everyone is alright. Did you buy a new truck or a car? About a month ago my wife called me because her van had been rearended while parked on the street in front of the Y while she was exercising. I remember being so thankful she was not in the van at the time. Furtunately for us the van is still drivable and we will just save the insurance payout, which was more than we would get if we fixed the van and traded it in, until we purchase a new vehicle next year. Anyway I praise God with you that all are safe. peace |

It's interesting when the Father teaches multiple children the same thing at once, right Gary? Thanks for the link, loved your blog!
Glenn, I'm sorry to hear about your minivan, also sure glad your wife wasn't in it at the time!! (We replaced my fun truck w/a "practical" family car...boohoo) Ya know, after we allowed the ins co to give my truck away to the auction house, I thought "man, should've asked to keep it and just pay the extra amount to fix it!" (nah, now I'm not thinking practically...) Anyway...thanks for the comment! |

I had the same experience when I got a phone call at 1:30 am from my daughter on an icy night about a year ago. The vehicle was a total loss but both my daughter and her friend were OK - just a bruised collar bone.
Truly, you learn quickly what is precious and what can be let go.
