| Turtles and Underwear |
|
| |
It was two Sundays ago, and we had a great service that morning. I mean the spirit was so thick that I had snot from ear to ear starting with the opening hymn; and when Nancy Jo got up to sing her special I was squawling like a two year old with a plate full of broccoli. Even Pastor was in rare form and delivered a message that would bring a snake to redemption. Now, fast forward one week later. I awoke early, eager to head off to church and re-visit that same warm feeling with my God. But this Sunday was already headed down-hill long before we ever even got out of the house. Let’s see if I can re-cap… Chase couldn’t find his “Cars” underwear (he likes to wear those to church every Sunday) and it turned out they won’t washed yet. So we finally got that straight and left the house about 20 minutes late. On the way, we stopped off at the convenience store to pick up some scotch tape and chewin gum. The clerk was gracious enough to point out that my shoes didn’t match. Yep, you guessed it… two penny loafers; one brown and one black! Well, I was 15 minutes away from home and 5 minutes away from church…and gas is $3.55 a gallon. I choose to stay the course. I seen Billy ray and Kathy on the side of the road changing a tire and I knew I couldn’t just blow by them; so I slowed down, blew the horn, and gave them a big wave. They are good friends. Anyway, we get to church only to learn of the “snappin’ turtle incident” out front of the church. I soon learned that an injured snappin’ turtle causes traumatic emotional distress among small children and lady-folk. Nobody appreciated my offerin’ to help cause they was thinking about a vet and I was thinking about soup. Long story a little shorter, the Pastor was on vacation, the music wasn’t up to par, and I just didn’t get much out of the whole thing. My enthusiasm for church had turned into a big ole let-down. I left there quite disappointed to say the least. Then during lunch, pondering the day’s events over a big ole plate of mac-n-cheese, I had a breakthrough of sorts. Let me explain… I realized that the same God that tugged on my heart-strings two Sundays ago was no less God last Sunday. God was, is, and always will be the same. The only things that change are me and my circumstances. Even though I don’t always feel Him, I can rest assured that He is there. God’s presence is not affected by snappin turtles and lost underwear; we are the ones who are affected. Last Sunday I let these circumstances get between me and my God; He was present but I was too distracted to realize it. It won’t happen next Sunday! Love to all, Rich |

I love - God is not affected - we are! That is so good---- The snapping turtle -hmmm? soup? hmmm? It would however be awful just awful if we were all the same -- God visit you - and I pray I preach messages that would bring a snake to redemption! |

Cars underware. Well...in this house, Pixar movies pretty much rule and Lightning McQueen is my sons favorite. We aren't into the underware stage yet...but I am sure it will be his favorite too. |

When I was at Christ for the Nations, we had a big problem with depression, and such. Come to find out, the students were going to McDonald's just before praise and worship, getting fries, burgers, and drinks. They would then go to praise and worship, and would be so excited for the Lord, ON FIRE!!!! Then about and hour or so later, God "left" them. They felt so let down! How could they be so excited about the Lord, and then He just leaves them like that. Well, there was one of the teachers was checking into this problem, and found out that these students were riding a sugar high, getting all worked up, "feeling" the Lord, then when the sugar wore off, there quit "feeling" the Lord. So I know what you mean about trusting the Lord in faith, not in feelings |

I agree with Stu. If I paid $3.55 A GALLON I'd be a happy chappy. Its cost me in your money $70.00 to fill my tank up and $2.38 in your money a LITRE. Me and Stu would be very happy paying your prices believe me, then we're getting clobbered for travelling every mile we do, and if that's not bad enough - they're installing cameras that calculate the average speed between one camera and another, so if you're 2 miles above the speed limit between those 2 cameras - you're clobbered again! And to add insult to injury, they're introducing toll roads - so that means "pay as you travel" so you get clobbered again. They're also thinking of introducing some type of tracking device that EVERYONE must have installed at yet another cost to the driver, that as soon as you leave your house - they'll know exactly where you are and where you go. Now that is the country that WE'RE having to live in. The motorist is being clobbered all over the place.
Sorry to have gone off on one, but me and our government do not have anything in common, in't that right Stu? Oh, and by the way. Great blog Rich, it certainly makes you think. The same God we served 2 weeks ago is the same God we serve today. Its just that "we" change depending on the circumstances. |

| We are not always in the mood to be close to God, and it all depends on the events of the day or week. Thankfully, like you said, God is always the same and He is always there with us even we are at our worst. |

I know exactly whatcha mean about letting the differences in Sundays get to ya. But praise GOD, he remains the same. Now go get the boy a couple pair of Lightnin' McQueen britches for back up and put both pair of loafers in the car now! LOL!
So good to have you back. I missed reading your stuff.

Dude, I love the way you can bring a powerful message in simple form. That's a true gift!
What I like most about this message is that it speaks highly about how God is not a Yo-Yo God. He's not with us at times, then separate from us at others. We say prayers like "Father, we pray that you would be with us this morning" That's really a stupid prayer. He already promised us that he would never leave us nor forsake us. Or, "Father, we pray that you go with us as we leave this place this morning". That's a stupid prayer also. He already said "I am with you always, even to the end of the world"
God's transmitter is never broken. His spirit is always pouring out. 24 Hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. If we are not hearing from or receiving from God it is because our receiver is broken, not his transmitter. We need to get turned on and tuned in!
Amen Rich! |

why, it is food, not any worse than eating a head of lettuce, or a hamberger. Turtle soup is GOOD! But so is apossum, squirl, rabbit, and when I was in Guatemala even had dog once. In other cultures they eat roaches, monkey brains, ants, all kinds of things.... if the Lord calls you out in the field to minister, you have to learn to thank the Lord for ANY kind of food. |

| GOOD STUFF!! I don't know if it is more funny that they wanted to save the turtle and you wanted to eat it, or simply that a redneck wears penny-loafers. Who knows? |
