Is God Silent?

Driving home yesterday, I was listening to the local Christian radio station. A song declared that the singer still believed even when God was silent. I began to wonder, is God really ever silent? I frankly don't think so. Does not all creation declare the mighty works of God at every moment!

Imagine asking God for a particular blessing, and instead of saying yes or no, he begins to tell us about his glory, his handiwork and his righteousness. Is that silence or is it that often God wants us to refocus our attention away from ourselves and onto him. The heavens are never silent. Creation constantly declares the glory of God.

Sometimes, just like Paul's request for (as some speculate) bodily healing, God is declaring that his grace is sufficient. Perhaps the heavens are also declaring that God's glory is sufficient, and we should be satisfied instead of always wanting more. In his book The Supremacy of God in Preaching, John Piper wrote that each desire or worry ought to be "swept up in the holy presence of God and laid bare to the roots of its Godwardness or godlessness." (1990, Baker Books, p. 12)

50:6 The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! [Selah]

97:6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness; and all the peoples behold his glory.

Hi Grant,

I also find it hard to imagine God ever remaining silent.

Doesn't this verse say sort of the same thing?

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:


Invisible things seen clearly. I just love that verse!

I believe that God transmits 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. If we are not hearing or seeing God, it's because our receiver is broken, not His transmitter. We just need to get turned on and tuned in!

God may be silent in that he doesn't actively stimulate our senses, the way someone would if they spoke to us, or hit us or something. But as Michael said, God is transmitting, in a low frequency, if we would learn to tune in and receive it! In other words, doesn't God's communication demand a response from us?? Rather than us demanding a response from him...

Yes guys, I agree. From our human point of view, we sometimes do think of God as silent. But of course, he is not. I'm reminded of the depressed prophet who heard God's "still small voice" reminding him of God's gentle and loving presence always. Blessings!
