27:12And Jehovah said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mountain of Abarim, and behold the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.
 
Moses is commanded by God to look at the promised land because he will not be entering it. As a pastor this passage is very heart breaking to me. Moses had led his people through so much and now he would not be with them as they entered into their homeland.
What had Moses done?
He had lost his temper.
God had told him to speak to the rock and he had struck the rock.
In a moment of weakness Moses forfeited the privilege of going in to the promise land.
As you read the Bible you can't help but be struck with the fact that even the greatest characters had a "dark side", an inclination to do wrong that would surface at the worst times. These were men and women of great moral character who at a moment of weakness gave in to the "dark side"
(David,Peter etc.) In theology we call it the sinful nature or the old man. Everyone of us must be aware of that dark side that in a moment can lead us to make some terrible life changing decisions.
Just ask Moses. |
