Miles, that is! As of this morning's 4 miles of sidewalk pounding, I have walked 600 miles in my walking program that I started 8 month ago. To put in to perspective for you, I have walked from Key West, Florida, where I was born, to Valdosta, Georgia. I have dropped 25-30 lbs of weight since then. When I was in the commissary recently, I picked up a 30 lb bag of rice to see what it felt like. It was heavier than I thought. Last fall, on a Sunday evening, the Pastor gave me my new life verse:
40:31 but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. I also do a lot of extra walking. 3 times a day I lap the building I work in. I call it a non-smoking break. I walk past the smokers on their smoke break. I take the long way around when walking in the building. I will walk to Kelley's if I need something. When I go to a store in my Jeep, I park at the opposite end of the parking lot from the store. I have found the walking to be fun and enjoyable. I may forget that sometimes at 0410 when I am falling out for my daily (weekdays) walk, but once I'm putting one foot in front of the other, I get "in the zone." I have three routes I like to walk. One takes me to in front of the doughnut shop for my turn around point. One takes me in the opposite direction, towards the Rocky Bayou Bridge and last Saturday I made the turn on the far side of the bridge, for a walk of nearly 6 miles. (A bridge too far? I think not!) 600 miles...I could have remained a couch tomatoe on the July afternoon last summer, but I chose to walk. I hope I am the better for it. |
