“But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: that no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” -1 Corinthians 1:27-31 KJV “Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John, and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were marveling, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.” -Acts 4:13 NASV This isn’t a blog to bash the highly educated. I have much respect for many Christian leaders who have titles & position & degrees. This is a blog to encourage those who feel they aren’t “useable” by God; that think they can’t accomplish mighty things for the Lord due to lack of education, intelligence, power, position, age or wealth. This is also a blog to challenge the Christian “Pharisees” to glory, not in their position, or titles or PhD/degrees, but to glory only in the Lord. To not be prideful, and feel they have more spiritual incite due to more “head knowledge”. I’ve run across that, and had to bite my tongue---HARD. But I’ve also ran across A LOT-- those who have the titles, education and so on-- that have treated me as their equal, and even allowed me to speak in to their lives. When Jesus began His ministry, who did He first call as disciples? The first 4 of the 12 were fishermen. Now, I grew up in a fishing area, where many schoolmates dropped out as early as junior high, to fish. As well, I’ve found many fishermen (NOT all) have been pretty rough around the edges; Missing teeth, low IQ, etc, etc. Now, my old pastor is a fisherman, so this isn’t a fishermen bash; I’m making a point. I could almost laugh picturing Jesus walking by the wharf in Digby, N.S. (Canada) where the fishermen are preparing their boats, smoking ciggs, spitting and checking out the ladies, and He stops in front of this mangy looking crowd. “Follow Me”. Wow. I could laugh! Of al the people to choose! Then a despised tax collector, a politician and so on. Abase, foolish, despised; oh yeah! Then you throw in at least one of His entourage being a woman who used to be a demon possessed talk-of-the-town crazy lady! I love it!! Of course, Jesus, God incarnate was even questioned by the highly educated scribes & Pharisees, because He was a carpenter by trade; not educated like them! They were offended at Him. Like, ‘How dare this uneducated idiot speak in God’s name!’ (Matthew 13:54-57, John 7:14&15). Do you think the Apostles had all the tools & books & so on that we have today? Can you picture Paul sitting there in prison, with his Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance, KJV Bible (of course-lol), Bible dictionary and a stack of books on other teachings, preparing a message for the churches? No! He was filled with the Holy Ghost. Well, that same Holy Ghost lives in you & I today if indeed, we walk in the truth. According to the Word of God, He (Holy Spirit) teaches me ALL things! And He will anoint me to do the ministry I am called to: “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.” -John 16:13 “And as for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.” -1 John 2:27 Even King David knew that God Alone, was his teacher: “O how I love Thy law! It is my meditation all the day. Thy commandments make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever mine. I have more incite than all my teachers, for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, because I have observed Thy precepts….I have not turned aside from Thine ordinances, for Thou Thyself hast taught me.” -Psalm 119:97-100, 102 “The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.” –Psalm 19:76 It is GOOD to be teachable. I am not saying not to listen to elders & pastors & mentors; What I am saying is Holy Spirit will lead you into ALL truth: Not your knowledge of Greek & Hebrew, not your Bible dictionary or Concordance, not your PhD/degrees, etc. etc. One quick example from my own life (NOTE: My husband takes no offense to this & knows I’m writing this): My husband is not an intellect. He’s never been a highly intelligent person, and it’s partly genetics. Sometimes it frustrates me because I’m the more genetically “intelligent” person in the marriage. This is fact. So you’d think, when the Lord speaks to us, and gives us revelation, that He’d keep it simple with my husband and reveal the more “profound” things to me, right? Wrong! See, this is the wisdom of God: He gives me simple little revelations anyone could understand like some I’ve shared in my blogs. With my husband, God will show him some super deep thing in the Word that I struggle to comprehend! Blows my mind!! God showed me one day recently, He does that so I won’t get all puffed up in my intelligence. See, it pleases God to take the uneducated, unintelligent, despised & rejected people, & use them & speak through them. When you hear the deep things of God flow out of the mouth of a simple person, God gets all the glory! Not a degree, not a high IQ. God is soooooooo cool! Like the saying goes, He used a donkey (Balaam’s), so He can surely use you! Don’t allow your lowly position, IQ or age keep you from walking in God’s power and wisdom. You have Holy Spirit; you have God’s Word (Bible); that’s all you need! Additional Scripture refs: Eccl. 9:15&16, Micah 4:6&7 |

That's right everyone should get their B.W.J. (Been With Jesus!) to make them smarter than their teachers.
Good thing your husband was smart enough to pick you! :) |

Loved The Blog Sister The way you talked about the fishermen in Canada was not much different then Peter and things were back in Jesus day.Peter spoke and did what ever came upon his mind he was hot temper.Paul was a thinker but they both told the Good News and Both died at Rome during the same time! I am neither smart or dumb, weak or strong but just what The Good Lord made me Tobe your brother in Christ. God Bless, Bro. |

| In all of my my church blog reading and I've read a lot this one really speaks to me, and makes my eyes water. I read "I was a hooker" and wow! You see, this is exactly what the heart of God is. He is not impressed with who we are, what we do, what we have accomplished. He doesn't care how self-righteous we are, how much money we give, or how much we read our Bibles. What He cares about is us being humble before Him, loving Him by choice with all of our hearts, walking by faith and trusting Him in all that we do. On the flip side, He is like that Back Street Boys Song "I don't care who you are, where you're from, what you did as long as you love Me." That is the whole point of grace we don't deserve it (God's love and favor). What is man that thou art mindful of us, or the son of man that You would visit us? I like you, am just glad to be chosen, and though I may not posess all that others have, I have the one posession that matters most. "Christ in me." AKA the "Holy Spirit and that Lara is enough." So sign me up to be identified with the debased things, the despised things, the ignoble and the unimpressive |

I think the intellect thing might get some people, but I know the other think that was daunting to me (and sometimes still makes me realize how far I have to go) is just understanding, knowing, and having memorized so much of the Bible. My wife recently went on a retreat (one that I had been on) and her big worry was that "I don't know a lot of bible verses". God can use all of us. Good blog. |

Lara, I was afraid this was going to be another one of those degree-bashing blogs, but I should have known you better! Thanks for a great reminder that God has a special place for every one of His children, no matter what background they have educationally, economically, etc. To some He gave knowledge, to others wisdom, to others hospitality, to others encouragement . . . and if we are wise we will appreciate all the gifts He has given, as they are all equally important to His kingdom.
When I volunteer at the local homeless shelter, my degrees are not much use to me. I have to humbly ask every time "How do you use this gas stove?" and How do you cook (anything)? I can help people through theological issues, Biblical interpretations, etc., but if it weren't for people with some of the other gifts, we'd all starve! :)
One of the most Spirit-filled people in my church is an 80-something-year-old prayer warrior who encourages everybody she knows. I have no idea what her education level is, and I don't care, but she blesses me everytime I see her, with her sincere love, her hugs, and her encouraging words. |

Mike, lol. yeah, it's a funny saying! lol But it makes a good point, doesn't it? Victorious, we definately balance each other out, and my man knows his Word--because of the Holy Spirit in him. :) Thanks for your kind words. Doyle, you are awesome! Brother To...(Todd?) I just love that God can use anyone and anything He so desires. I love that we don't have to meet the world's standards! thanks for reading. Growing in Faith, my husband and I recently had a newly saved 20 yr old ex-junkie over, and he humbled me! I know the Bible, but you ask me what Chapter and verse??? Forget it! This loud kid, he was really awesome at that! Ppl would look at him, with his rapper type attire, his loud outspoken and sometimes "babe in Christ" pride, smoking ciggs and telling everyone he meets about all the drugs he did and how he has Hep C..you get my point? I have seen some of the looks he gets in my church with his unrestrained enthusiasm (I say give er), and yet he knows his Word! Soooooooooooo, all that said for what point? Doesn't matter who we are, and how well we know where this or that is found in the Bible (although that is a very good thing to know), God still uses us, and the most important thing is reaching the lost. There are ppl as well that know their Bible inside out and have not love. They read it but don't do it. So I figure I may not be able to quote what page, chapter and so on, but I'd rather grow in love than be puffed up and deceived in my head knowledge. thanks for reading! :) |
Kathy, I would never do that, because God does call many ppl to get degrees/doctorates. I know He does. It's just if He wants us to do something, it doesn't matter what kinda education we have behind us. I tend to think in terms of we need Christians in every field of work! So we can reach every kind of person. My dad was not alway a farmer. He quit teaching to farm. He was head of the biology dept. at a high school, and Mom was going to go to med school before Dad moved them to the farm. She has a science degree. So my parents are both highly intelligent and they are educated ppl, and my dad can quote scriptures right, left and centre. I'm glad you dropped by, because I did not want to pay any disrespect to you and others here who have education, and you have assured me I haven't. BTW, you have never been a "Pharisee" to me. Thanks for reading! |

I'm in complete agreement, Lara. So was 2nd century Christian philosopher Athenagoras who wrote, "Among us are uneducated folk, aritsans, and old women who are utterly unable to describe the value of our doctrines in words, but who attest them by their deeds." Pretty smart for an old dead guy!
Great blog, Lara! :) |

Preach on, oh you in the land of dial-up!
God hasn't had anybody qualified working for him yet, and you, or I, won't be the first!
God doesn't call the qualified.....He qualifies the called! |

| Great blog Lara. God will provide whatever we need to do the job that He wants us to do. Doesn't matter what kind of education we have, or if we don't have any! |
Kathy, yeah! The "dead guy" said it very well indeed! lol Thanks for sharing that! :) Michael, that's a great saying too, and pretty much sums up what I am trying to say. Awesome. Deb, exactly! Joyce Meyer said the same thing. She doesn't have all the "titles" and degrees, but she knows the 3 essentials: The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost. I personally would find it very intimidating (and discouraging) indeed if the only ppl out there doing ministry were ppl with big degrees and Dr. before their names, because I am not someone who even enjoys school....loved ministry school, but that's a whole other thing! thanks for reading, mushroom lady! lol Teasing! |

Hey Lara, Something else about the educated in Jesus' day was; they were always hashing it out over the written words, "always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth (2 Timothy 3:7)." I can over eat also. Instead of getting up and going out with the amount needed for the day (maybe just one verse), I can sit there at the table and over-eat. This may tie-into what is being said in 2 Tim? Instead of laying hold of one truth for the day, I can get my mind so expanded... that it is like a ballon ready to pop! Instead of going out into the world to be an example of Christ in the marketplace, I can gather more food than what I am able to bear. Jesus didn't set up a tape table with His 9-set series on how to get involved. Instead He got involved and kept walking. |
Amen sister. Thanks for the refreshing encouragment. And you're so right on! We just need our time with Jesus and education by the Holy Spirit! God transforms all of us and makes us to be a sweet aroma of Christ. I've studied through to get my MDiv, and while in seminary, I was considering whether or not to pursue a PhD. It's only another study project, lots of hours and a piece of paper. Some people God has to do that to place them places in this life, but as you beautifully pointed out, God doesn't need all that in His people, and He brings glory to His name using the despised and the weak and the base things of this world. And some he even takes to seminary! I just noticed what R is saying. I don't know if we can over-eat at the Bible table. I think we can over-academiaize the scriptures, but Mary sat at the Lord's feet and just drank in what he said. She had no great degree of theology, but she knew Jesus and knew His will! Sure we can sometimes read tons, which maybe R is referring to, and not remember it all, or feel wasted, but we need to take one part to meditate on, to chew on through the day (regurgitate?), and reflect on it an let it transform us. |
Dave, Hahahaha! I'll have to share that with my Acadian other half: Dorque! I love it....and yes, Dave, even a dork like you! Especially a dork like you! R, all I can say to what you said is a big fat and hearty AMEN! :) |

Keep them coming. You did a great job with this one, well you do with all of them now that I think about it. This really ministered to me as I am sure it did to a lot of other people. I am going to try to print it out for a friend, who wouldn't know a computer if he saw it, he deals with these inadequate feelings at times. Thanks again. B |

Brandy, thank you. I enjoy writing, and this one has been sitting on a back burner for a while, but I kept encountering scriptures during prayer time that kept reminding me of this. I hope I point everyone to the truth of the matter: We ALL can be used mightily of God. Thanks for reading! codylrules, thanks for reading! I am really glad it spoke to you. Notice AGE is one of the things I mentioned. I've seen a 5 year old ministering and praying over ppl! God isn't looking at your age, but your heart! |

I know what you mean Lara. I ain't got no degrees, but I sure have wrapped up some theologians in my time who are all talk but no walk. And if you're wondering what I mean by "theologians", they're all head knowledge people that know the bible back to front, but what's lacking is no heart knowledge. In biblical times they were called Pharisees who knew all the rules, but also heaped guilt and condemnation onto people that could hardly stand up with what they've already got.
My one difference with these people, I bite my tongue for a time (and this could last for a few months) and I hear all the patter that you'd expect, then its WHAM! And it suprises me how many people back off when they come across a person with head knowledge, but its also backed up with a strong heart knowledge. Its as if the pages leap out from the bible, by-pass the brain and goes straight to the heart because they've been there, done it and brought the tee-shirt. And when that happens, its the most powerful testimony a person could every imagine. Its one thing saying "this is what Jesus has done for me", its quite another saying "and this is what I have done with what Jesus has done for me."
And lastly. Going off-track slightly. The apostle Paul wrote, I'd rather say 5 words that make sense - than ten thousand words that don't make sense. With theologians, it may sound good, but what does it mean? Get my point? |
| Steve, Amen! It's fine to have head knowledge, so long as the heart knowledge is present too. Thanks for your comments. You are right. |
| I forgot to mention. If God can use a donkey, He can surely use an "ass" like me. I'm as thick as two planks and I don't mind admitting it. LOL!!!! |
| A King James Version ass of course...not the gross slang North America has turned it in to! lol And asses (donkeys) are stubborn, so perhaps God really was making a point, eh? |
| R, I ALWAYS think of that Scripture....never thought of the over-eating bloated thing. lol VERY VERY good! Hahahaha! I don't want to be a doughball! That's great! lol |

"Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies (parts is parts) -1 Cor. 8:1." Over-eating makes me puffy... but love? That's what matters most. Do I know enough to do that? Jesus said, "I have food to eat of which you do not know (John 4:32)." Love. It's what keeps us alive. Be a do-er, not a dough-ball. I'm talking to myself of course. R... |
| Haha! I'm too lazy to repost, so we'll pretend I have prophetic abilities to know what you were going to say before you said it! Hehe! I'm just joking of course. :-) Now I'm being a dough head! |

| The disciples were known because "they had been with Jesus." We can all do that. |

| Lara, great blog. Not only does it remind us that God can use us, but it should also remind us that we should allow ourselves to receive from anyone - regardless of their background - if they are walking in the Word. Selah. |
