| Back from "Almost Heaven, West Virginia" with NEW Hillbilly Stories to Tell |

Sadly, as I blogged about a week ago, my most dearest cousin passed away. My wife and I took my dad and step-mother down to the funeral in a rented van so we could travel together in a comfortable manner without being squished up against my wheelchair. I lost my mother to a smoking-related illness about 25 years ago and my dad is remarried to a wonderful lady that keeps his 80+ year old body in shape! LOL We traveled through the mountains of West Virginia to the Tri-State area (KY-OH-WV) where I am PROUDLY from. :) I would move back in a heartbeat to the mountain style of living where "can you get back to me ASAP" actually means a response is expected within the next week or so; IF nothing more important comes up. Some of the new stories I have to share as a result of this trip are: 1. Dinner from Hillbilly Hotdogs and their Flu Shot masterpiece, out-house in the restaurant, and dinner in a bathtub with the table held up on one side by a toilet plunger. 2. A 15+ minute ambulance response time. 3. New temporary tags on a just-purchased pickup truck that probably was not going to go for more than 5 miles before falling apart. 4. The case of the disappearing Kleenex boxes. 5. And much, much more. What a week! Oh yeah, we laid my cousin to rest without too many hillbilly-hiccups. LOL My cousin is now at home with our Lord and I'm sure she is rejoicing with the others in Heaven. We celebrated her life and became reacquainted with old friends. I'm glad that we were able to rejoice at a time such as this. I just wish that we could make that trip more often to be able to experience the rich environment of my true hillbilly stompin' grounds! | Good to have you back Dave. A group of us from C3 (Calvary Community Church) will be heading by there on our way to Mississippi on April 14. We'll be working with the North Carolina Baptist Men's group...helping them to accomplish their goal of rebuilding 600 homes for God's glory. |

| I personally got a kick out of "dinner in a bathtub with the table held up on one side by a toilet plunger" - he he. |

| Okay, so, I should add: right around there abouts is where my father's family hails. KY, TN and OH. Where they all collide with WV. :-) Beautiful country. |

For Mike n Laura, I'm not joking about the bathtub setup. It's true! It's the old time cast iron white tub sitting on four legs. It had a flat board across each end of the tub to sit on. The table flipped up to one side so you could get in and when the table was lowered, the support post was the plunger. I would have taken a picture but was so amazed at everything in this shack (and shack it was), I forgot! Oops! Another eating position was on bar stools at a high round table. The table edge was a tire with a wooden center. I know, I know... Pictures would have been worth multiples of a thousand words! Mary Ann, will you all be passing by Huntington, WV that is along I-64 and just west of Charleston (the state's capitol)? If so, I'll give you directions to the place on Third Avenue just up the street from Buddy's BBQ. Dave |

Let's pray it is on the way... You all can take all of the pictures I did not get. Besides, the hot dogs are great; especially the Flu Shot dog! It comes packed with jalapenos! Mmmmm Mmmmm Good! :) |

| We will not be get very close to Huntington, WV. The closest we will be to there is during our run down Interstate 81. I believe it intersects Interstate 77 a number of miles east of Huntington. |

Mark, I would tell you that Hillbilly Hotdogs is worth the detour but I would not want to take away time for your trip. Also, you might lose some of your members in the out-house with the chicken. Others might just decide to stay in Huntington. It is where the movie "We are Marshall" takes place about a plane crash in 1970 where the entire sports team with coaches, team doctors and their wives and fans perished. Marshall University (The Herd) is located in Huntington. Dave |

| Sounds like hillbilly heaven to me, my kinda place. We are going to be on a roll to get to Gulfport MS. So we won't have a bunch of time to sight see along the way. We are going to lay over near the Great Smoky Mountian National Park in Gatlinburg for the night. then get some good down home style grits, hush-puppies and sweet tea. Pray for our 16 person team that we will not only be able to fix some houses but share God's love and unfailing hope with Katrina survivors. |

Mark, Look at the bottom of this webpage: http://wvgourmetfoods.com/gourmetcentral/online_order.htm and be sure to order a bottle of this:
fer dem grits! I have a bottle in my 'fridge if you need some. It just needs to be kept cool so the bottle doesn't melt from the contents' chemical reactions! Dave |

My brother in-law and sister in-law live in Chesapeake, Ohio right near the tri-state area. I drove the girls up there to see them two years ago. But I don't think "Bessie" aka my car, would be able to make it up those mountains ever again! She would only go 35 in a 65 up those mountains two years ago! And that was on the wings of prayer to say the least! Praise God that your cousin knew (and now knows even better :) our Great and Glorious God! |

Sue, LOL on the hard time getting up the mountains. Been there, done that - - way too many times! As for Chesapeake, that is where my dad's brother last lived before he passed away. I guess that you've seen that cool single-support suspension bridge between Huntington and Proctorville?
