The name JEHOVAH-JIREH is one of the many compound names of JEHOVAH. The name JEHOVAH itself, which we have learned, reveals God as the eternal, self-existent One, the God of revelation, the God of moral and spiritual attributes - of righteousness, holiness, love and therefore of redemption. JEHOVAH is the God with a special covenant relationship with Israel. The historic incident out of which the name JEHOVAH-JIREH rises is one of the most moving in the Word of God. When facing the greatest trial of his life, Abraham meets JEHOVAH-JIREH which means “the LORD will foresee and provide” (Genesis 22:8,14). ELOHIM has appeared to Abraham with an astounding command to offer up a sacrifice, a burnt offering of his one and only beloved son, Isaac. Abraham is apparently unaware he is being tested. In his tremendous faith, he proceeds to carry out the command. At the very last minute, just before Abraham plunges the knife into Isaac, JEHOVAH-JIREH provided a ram in the thicket to take Isaac’s place. In this Old Testament tradition, the blood and burnt offering was an atonement for sin. This was but a foreshadowing of what JEHOVAH-JIREH would provide as an offering for the whole world. Animals cannot take away the sins of men. (Isaiah 40:16) . JEHOVAH-JIREH is that name of God in the Old Testament that uniquely points to God’s provision on the cross. And if God would give us His own Son, will not JEHOVAH-JIREH “…freely give us all things” (Romans 8:32)? He has provided His Son, the Lamb of God, to take our place on the cross (John 3:16). JEHOVAH-JIREH is the God who provided the ultimate blood sacrifice, “who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification” (Romans 4:25). He delivered His own Son to death, and raised Him back to life which brings us justification. Justification declares us righteous before God. JEHOVAH-JIREH provides a way for us to be right with Him. “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, in that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him” (1 John 4:9). It is the love of our Heavenly Father that provides our every need. Everything we have ever received has come to us by JEHOVAH-JIREH, who provides for our every need (Philippians 4:19). It is JEHOVAH-JIREH who has the foreknowledge to see into the future and make provision ahead of time for the trials and testings we must face. It is JEHOVAH-JIREH who saw the need to provide a way for man’s sins to be forgiven. Everything we have ever possessed came from JEHOVAH-JIREH. Just as He provided for His servant, Abraham, He will provide for us all. |
