Police make plea to missing woman

The Associated Press

Police appealed Thursday for an Alabama minister's wife who disappeared at a religious conference to contact authorities if she is able.

Authorities said Mary Byrne Smith, 30, does not face criminal charges. The mother of two was last seen March 24 at the Living Proof Live conference in Bossier City, La.

Police said she told a friend at 11 a.m. that she was going to the concession stand, but she never returned to her seat. The conference ended at noon and the friend waited at her car for two hours and then called police to report Smith missing. Her travel bag was in the car.

During a news conference Thursday, Police Chief Mike Halphen said there was no evidence of foul play, but detectives were still handling her disappearance as a missing person case.

"We just want to know she's OK so her family will know and we can quit spending man hours searching for her," Halphen said.

Halphen's news conference followed one held at the minister's church in Summerdale, Ala., in which Smith's husband, the Rev. Jason Lee Smith, asked her to contact them. Smith is pastor of the First Baptist Church in the coastal town.

Halphen said detectives had learned that Smith was about to lose her job as a kindergarten teacher after testing positive for painkillers.

Last December, Smith said she needed to change her address because she was divorced and needed to get personal mail at school, according to Halphen. Her husband found that out when he went to the school after his wife disappeared and asked for some records, he said.

If Smith left on her own, she would not face charges because she has not filed a police report, Halphen said.

Mary "Beth" Byrne Smith
Overview
Free Will Or Foul Play?

Mary "Beth" Byrne Smith is the wife of the pastor at First Baptist Church in Summerdale, Ala. She left her home with a friend to attend Living Proof Live, a popular women's evangelical conference at the CenturyTel Center in Bossier City, La.

On Saturday March 24, 2007, Beth left her friend at 11:00 a.m to go to the concession stand. She never returned. The conference ended at noon, and her friend went to the car to wait for her. At 2:00 p.m, she called police to report Beth missing.

Cops have no indication she met with foul play, and are asking the community for information regarding her whereabouts. Beth has two small children with her husband, and teaches kindergarten at a local public school. She was last seen searing a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans.
