As christians, we have been by and large been misled that our religion is exactly like the one Christ came to replace. We forget to easily that we are not a people bound by laws, but one given freedom through grace. It has become so easy to forget our own past before Christ and our own sins we commit even now. Being saved doesn't make us perfect, but in the beauty of God's plan the sacrifice of Christ offers us redemption and forgiveness.
I think we forget that we are not supposed to be spreading the hate of man, but the love of God. We claim to others that our God offers us free redemption, but then we (the church, not God) put terms and conditions on that redemption. Even though that these terms and conditions were not part of our own redemption. God met each of us exactly where we were at. He didn't demand that we stopped sinning first, because He knows we will never be able to stop doing that. He picked us up where we were and showed us that there was something better for us than what we had. Once we realized that and accepted it, all He asked of us was that we do the same for others.
I also think we too easily forget that we are just as fallen as everyone around us. Again, our sin is no different to anyone else's in the eyes of God. The only thing that separates us from others is that we found redemption through Christ, and the desire be as obedient to God's instructions as we can. That however does not make us perfect, always right, or even a good person, only a redeemed one.
I say all of this to point out, there are a lot of fallen people out there that instead of seeing the love of Christ, received the hatred of mankind from someone claiming to be a christian. I weep and I know that God weeps each time He sees someone hating His creation in the name of His only Son. Should we be holding up signs telling grieving people their loved ones are "Burning in Hell right now!"? Should we be screaming at someone's scared and confused daughter that they are a murderer? Are we really showing the love of Christ when we discriminate, spit, or hate on those not like us even though they too are God's creation? I cannot help but feel that we will be held accountable for allowing these things to happen in the name of Christ. |
