(Part 5, and last, in a series) I’m reminded of a song by the Beatles which was written by Paul McCarthy – Lady Madonna. It begins: Lady Madonna, children at your feet Wonder how you manage to make ends meet Who find the money when you pay the rent Did you think that money was heaven sent
And ends: Lady Madonna, children at your feet Wonder how you manage to make ends meet
I wonder too. I wonder who’ll find the money for the sake of the Gospel. I wonder how we’ll manage to make ends meet. Influence is not the same as power. America still can wield tremendous influence in the new era that is coming upon us. Just as the “British Invasion” brought a new music to America after America had established itself as a world leader in the new sound of rock-and-roll, the Christian Church in America can continue to offer influence. The coach is still a powerful influence although not the power player. The power centers of the world are becoming progressively less Christian. This is the key. As we move to a new position for world power, we (America will have to take a seat at the table alongside the rest of the nations. The support and identity of “Christian America” will cease (if it hasn’t already). It will be up to those in the new power centers to bring about a continuation of Christian belief in whatever new form it takes. It is up to us to seek it identify it and pray about it. The Protestant Church was not viewed politely by the Roman Catholic hierarchy 300 years ago but much of that has since been forgiven. Similarly, we may not think politely of the new order that we see in Christianity. What shape will it be? What will be its face and how will it emulate the teaching of Jesus and the apostles? To these questions I have no answers. What I do know is that it will look a lot different than what we have now. The major players will be from "over there" bring ideas that are not American. The face of Christianity will look quite different - not only in ethnic composition but in its rooting. Just as American Christianity has been influenced by those who immigrated here for religious freedom, Christianity "over there" will be influenced by cultural heritage. Just as Christianity here sometimes gets mixed up in politics and conservatism/liberalism, the new face of Christianity will express issues that are true for non-Americans over what Americans may like to see. More importantly, because Christianity "over there" is much closer to many other types of religions, we may see a number of influences and expressions that are not "traditional" but which still support and espouse the Gospel as Jesus gave it to us.
If you're from"over there" and reading this, you have a pretty good idea about what I'm talking about. The non-American flavor will be the predominate taste. Americans (and Anglos in general) should be willing to embrace what God is offering in this new face of Christianity. Personally, I'm glad that there are no photographs, portraits or sculptures of Jesus or the apostles that are based on what they actually looked like. We know that they weren't European but sometimes we forget. This new face will similarly represent non-European characteristics. I know not what that will be.
I only pray that I am able to see clearly enough when the time comes to recognize Christ in my brother and the Holy Spirit in my sister when the time comes. I pray you will too. |

| So thought-provoking, Gene. Outside the realm of my own cognitive connections right now, as we American Christians are so accustomed to being inside the box of our own little protected mini-worlds. You have begun to broaden my box ever so slightly with these writings, and I will prayerfully reread this series, because I can sense the importance of the big picture you are presenting. Thank you, Gene! |

| AMen....and how will we make ends meet? Our Father is RICH and the same God who provided for Elijah during 3 years of drought and famine, will provide for us today! It will be a faith-building time for sure for all of us! |

I don't worry about the end. For it will be beautiful. I had a dream several years ago... I still remember the colors and the rooms. Oh my... it was so awesome I can't find the words to describe it.

| Like Joey, I try not to worry about the end. God is still on the throne. This series of blogs was great Gene. Very thought provoking! |

| Thanks everyone. I appreciate your comments. I only hope that the body of believers in America will be prepared as the shift happens and recognize rather than criticize what form it may take when we see it "over there." Like you said, Kathy, we tend to see things from our box. Yes, when the end comes and we are all together in glory it will be beautiful. But what about what goes on here until that happens? The apostles thought the end was near too. We may have a wait yet. |

Hey Gene, I agree very much with Kathy, that you have given us some serious thoughts to ponder and pray about. I also agree that taking some time to reread some of these thoughts will be helpful. But mostly I agree with your last statement, "I only pray that I am able to see clearly enough when the time comes to recognize Christ in my brother and the Holy Spirit in my sister when the time comes. I pray you will too. " Thanks brother peace |

I am going to repeat my comment here as I seem to be a little behind on this series, and it is appropos her as well: "As American society moves further from the Gospel, we will need fresh ideas on how to present the message." I think the fresh ideas are already there in this progression. Other nations are responding to the message that is God's ultimately. We have had that message for too long and we are jaded. What is that message? "Social reform"" or the spiritual regeneration of fallen men through the message of Christ's substitutonary sacrifice and subsequent resurrection? If it's social reform that boat has long sailed.... American Society is burying itself. I agree with Glenn...end-times are rapidly approaching and we (USA) may be involved in the third of the earth's people that the Bible says is destroyed. God's Holy Spirit moves from nation to nation in the hearts of His people --we could all go away here in the US and God's plan will continue unhampered, as His will is irresistable. As for our influence, Joey has it right. The Holy Spirit does the work we are only the conveyence. |

And I'm going to pick up where I left off, Hal. When those other cultures bring their flavor to Christianity we will see things that are "different." There will be many who will embrace it just because it's new and "different" because they dislike organized religion. That would be a mistake, because they are not looking at and judging the spirits as Paul tells us - mostly because they have no sense of history or theology. They like what they like and will run where itching ears will lead them. Some of that will be directly toward heresy.
On the other hand, there will be those who believe that anything "different" cannot be of God because"we know what God wants in the way of worship and sacrifice" and will dismiss it. That too would be a mistake. God is not hemmed in by our programs and scripts for worship. Their dismissal of what is happening may be in direct opposition to Godly, Christian principle solely on the basis of "differences" and an ideal of "what is right in my own eyes."
IMHO what is truly needed is a grounding in the understanding of who we are, where we've been and what makes us "little Christs." Once we understand that we will be prepared as America Christians to sort through what will be coming. What we've seen in the way of differences is nothing in comparison to what we'll be seeing in the near future. Church, get ready. |
