| I Miss the Hymns of the Faith |

"For when I think, that God His Son not sparing, Sent Him to die, I scare can take it in. And on that cross, my burdens gladly bearing He bled and died to take away my sin."
'Amazing love how can it be? That thou my God wouldst' die for Me?"
"I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore. Very deeply stained within sinking to rise no more. Then the Master of the sea heard my despairing cry. From the waters lifted me now safe am I."
"Wonderful grace of Jesus greater than all my sin, how can my tongue describe it? Where shall His praise begin? Purchasing peace and pardon for all eternity, the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me!
Do any of these lines look familiar? They come from some of the great hymns of the faith. The hymns are filled with doctrine and testimonies of God's love. Granted not all of the hymns were scripturally sound, but many of them are. These hymns help me synthesize my faith into songs of hope and redemption. Some of my fondest memories of church as a child were Sunday night hymn sings where we could pick our favorite songs to sing. I sure do miss that! I know times change and the way we do things change, but I personally miss the hymns. I can understand if you don't like them, but to me they are wonderful words of life, words of life and beauty teaching faith and duty! It is a scriptural commandment to sing Psalms, Hymns, and spiritual songs. We have the spiritual songs down and the Psalms down, but I how I miss the Hymns.
"All hail the power of Jesus name Ye ransomed from the fall. Hail Him who saved you by His grace and crown Him Lord of all! Bring forth the royal diadem and crown Him Lord of All"
"Crown Him, Crown Him, Crown Him Lord of All."
I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene and wondered how He could love me a sinner condemned unclean? Oh how marvelous Oh, how wonderful is my Savior's love for me!
Don't get me wrong I love the new music! I love Hillsong and Chris Tomlinson. It is just that I am getting older and getting more sentimental lately. These hymns still come to me randomly in my worship and quiet times. I am thankful for them and miss singing them. |

Valarie, I love that album. I like "LIft up Your Head" and "I'll Fly Away" on that album. I can worship with the new music it is more singing to God than about God, but I believe our this generation are missing out on something that could be beneficial to them. |

First, Bro Todd let me say I teared up with the first one.......I always do, LOL........our church still does a mix of songs, in fact, we sang "How Great Thou Art" last Sunday morn. We still do the "pick a hymn" about once a month on Sunday nights, too. Hubby always picks "Brethren, we have met to worship" That's his favorite :) I sang "I'll Fly Away" by Jars last month in church. That was the rendition played at dad's funeral, it was the only thing that my hubby requested :) We have an elderly man in church who can make a piano talk,LOL. And every once in a while he plays.......oh my, I can't keep still when he touches those keys. |

| As for me...I'm not a song person. In fact, my Dakota is tuned in to a talk station. Don't get me wrong, I like music, especially sacred, but I am more inspired by listening than by singing. Am I weird or what? |

| At our church almost all of our worship is singing the scriptures or singing directly to the Father in worshipful fashion. I love it! And what I loved when my children were little was that I would hear them singing the songs and know that the Word was in their heart to stay. I think that's the beauty of these old hymns--there are powerful truths about God's character revealed in the words and they resound in our spirit; they elevate our thoughts to capture His and rest in His beauty. |

Cindy, I used to "Bretheren We Have Met to Worship" as a lead off song. "All is vain unless the Spirit of the Holy one comes down."l Love it! I love a good pianist too!
Ed, I don't know how to answer that question! LOL Different strokes for different folks!
Birdie, Isn't it great when the kids start singing? There are a ton of Sunday School chorouses I learned that I still have not forgotten. It is a powerful way to teach the Word and the love of God to children. I have an autistic son, and yesterday he just blurted out singing in public: "What a mighty God we serve!" It's beautiful! |

Brother Todd, I completely agree with you. There are a number of hymns that I miss, but I give myself to what ever worship is happening at the moment, and know my redeemer lives and what comfort this sweet sentence gives. Thanks for the reminder that we have a wonderful resource in our hymnals. peace |

Bro Todd, we were on a mission trip in IN, sleeping in a church for a week. The worship leader we took was from TN, he was an inspiration! He brought very little money, he totally depends on what God supplies, had no job.....ok, we at first thought he was nuts, lol.....he walks the streets of Memphis witnessing to kids. God supplied him with a place to live and everything he needed to do this. Well, he sang that song accapella...........goosebumps! While we there, the SBC called him, they wanted him to sing at the convention, which would be the week after we left , in Indianapolis. He had no money, but said yes.......also had no way home to TN, but said yes.....and boom! God supplied it alllllllllllllllllllllllllllll. He, my husband and I got to team up alot there, working with the quote "Rougher side people".....learned so much from him!!!!! He and my husband visited a biker ( something we're familiar with) and he came back and told me that my husband was sooooooooo used by God with that man, that he couldn't have gotten in the door without my husband, then my husband took over.....that is sooo unlike hubby to do that.....but our friend is an encourager :) |

We used to sing this in Bible College! I love those old hymns and still sing them today.
Lord, as of old, at Pentecost, Thou didst Thy power display, With cleansing, purifying flame, Descend on us today. Lord, send the old-time power, The Pentecostal power! Thy floodgates of blessing, on us throw open wide! Lord, send the old-time power, The Pentecostal power! That sinners be converted and Thy Name glorified! For mighty works for Thee, prepare And strengthen every heart; Come, take possession of Thine own, And never more depart. Lord, send the old-time power, The Pentecostal power! Thy floodgates of blessing, on us throw open wide! Lord, send the old-time power, The Pentecostal power! That sinners be converted and Thy Name glorified! All self consume, all sin destroy! With earnest zeal endue Each waiting heart to work for Thee; O Lord, our faith renew! Lord, send the old-time power, The Pentecostal power! Thy floodgates of blessing, on us throw open wide! Lord, send the old-time power, The Pentecostal power! That sinners be converted and Thy Name glorified! Speak, Lord! before Thy throne we wait, Thy promise we believe, And will not let Thee go until The blessing we receive. Lord, send the old-time power, The Pentecostal power! Thy floodgates of blessing, on us throw open wide! Lord, send the old-time power, The Pentecostal power! That sinners be converted and Thy Name glorified! The Ames Hymn Collection |
