8:1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that [was] with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged; It is so interesting, to me, how we view God's activity in our lives. Noah was given clear instruction by the Lord to build an ark so as to be saved from the coming judgment upon the earth. As the rains come, God shuts Noah, his family, and all the animals in the ark. Then Noah does not hear from God for a while. God doesn't come along to encourage him and remind him that the flood will not last forever. In fact, Noah is in that boat for just over a year before he is able to come out again. Day after day - nothing from God. Then we come to chapter 8 and it tells us that "God remembered Noah." We have no reason to believe that God ever forgot about Noah. Often the word "remember" is used of God in the Old Testament to refer to God acting after a period of what seems like inactivity. So often, we go through the same things in our own lives. We go through a period of time where it seems like God has forgotten us, but we are the ones who forget that God is fully in control and watching over our every step. There have been times in my life when God has directed me to do something and I don't get further "marching orders." I remember one instance where I was crying out to God asking Him why He hasn't told me the next step to take. He spoke to my heart that I would be told the next step when I was finished taking the first step. For Noah, he was still taking the first step - he was safe in the ark awaiting the waters to recede. His job was to now sit still until it was time for God to tell him the next step to take. God did not forget Noah, He was simply waiting until step one was done before directing Noah to step two. Even when God appears silent, He is still in control. He is still watching over the events of our lives. He is still working for His own glory in our lives. And praise God for those wonderful moments when He "remembers" us and makes His plan clear. |
