Matthew 20:28 KJV; Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Written by Rev. Jesus Ramos Jr. Prophet Jay Schenectady, NY
This script may be used for the promotion of the gospel for public exhibition but the credit must remain intact Scene: Primarily a comedy. Can be performed in front of a church or on a stage or platform that faces an audience. The auctioneer plays a major role and can be made to look like a Carnival Barker or like an old fashioned auctioneer. The person that plays the part of the soul stands close to the auctioneer as the auctioneer presents the soul like a piece of merchandise. The auctioneer doesn't like the soul so the mood should reflect this. There is a sense of urgency like everything has to be done in a hurry but keep things moving slowly so the audience can absorb what is going on. To make things more dramatic the setting could be darkened with the ligthing on the auctioneer and the soul and each character as they present themselves. Costumes would really increase the effect but don't overdo it. You don't want to take away from the dialogue. This can be done tastefully and can be very funny. The climax of the play is when Jesus arrives on the scene. This can be done dramatically either from behind the audience or from behind the auctioneer and the soul. This all depends upon the layout of the venue and should be rehearsed for maximum impact. At this point everything should light up and the voice of Jesus should be amplified to increase the effect. The characters fleeing when Jesus arrives should produce a lot of laughs, but this can quickly turn to tears as Jesus makes His offer. Altogether this makes for a great play that should stir up a lot of emotion. Cast of Characters: Auctioneer: Main Character Soul: Main Character Preferably a young male, Teenager World: Supporting character (Preferably female, Costume can be glittery, flashy) The idea is to look tempting but in a tasteful way.
Addiction: Supporting Character (Costume can show both sides of addiction)
Satan: Main Character (Sinister, evil) Black suit is fine, face makeup
Jesus: Main Character (Just a white robe, little embellishment) Angels: Children in white robes with toy swords Act 1 Auctioneer: (Like a carnival barker) Hurry hurry, step right up ladies and gentlemen. Today we have a special treat in store for you to bid on. Feast your eyes upon this lovely soul. It can be yours if the price is right. Will anyone make an offer to start the bidding? (Pause) You sir in the front row...what is your offer? [World rises from his/her seat and all attention focuses on world. A colored spotlight would do great right about now ] World: (Boastfully) Well first of all permit me to introduce myself. My name is World and I have much to offer. I can give fame and fortune and put a name up in lights. I can give more money than you have ever seen, the best clothes, fancy automobiles, Lear jets, Yachts, Mansions, anything anyone could possibly want or need is here for the asking, I spare no expense, if the soul agrees to serve me and do everything I ask it to do. (very dramatic, flamboyant) [All attention shifts to the auctioneer that looks surprised that someone has made an offer and is hasty about trying to end this before world changes his/her mind] Auctioneer: (Speaking to the soul) Well that sounds like a tempting offer for your soul, are you interested? (Pause) Is that a yes? (Pause) In that case will World come up and claim this soul? (Pause, summons World to come up) Come on we don't have all day! (Sounding hasty, wants to get this over with) [Walks up to inspect his/her prize] World: (While standing next to the soul) I didn't expect this to be so easy, how simple it was to lure you and deceive you! Aren't you aware of the long list of casualties I keep records of to remind myself how good I am? Oh yes I can make things appear so glamorous from the start. Once I have you in my grasp though the illusion quickly fades and you find yourself in a depraved condition performing all sorts of lewd acts just to eat a dry morsel of bread. I'll take you from one roach and rat infested cheesey hotel to another while you try to live out this ridiculous fantasy of finding fame and fortune. What do you care? You don't own yourself, you never have. (Pause) Oh poor thing, you look like you want to cry...do you need a tissue? (Making gestures like tears falling, pull out hankie and blow nose/sarcastically) [Addiction bolts upright in protest shaking a fist in anger] Addiction: Wait! (Pause) We haven't heard all the offers yet and I want to make a bid! [Attention shifts back to the auctioneer who looks frustrated now that this is going to continue] Auctioneer: (Disgustingly) Okay so what are you willing to offer this soul? [Addiction should be standing as the lights highlight him/her. Addiction is very egostistical so he/she should use hand and arm gestures to accentuate as he/she speaks] Addiction: (Tempting the soul) You see, my name is addiction and you are already familiar with me. I have everything you need to make all of your problems just melt away. Just don't get carried away because I have a way of growing on you. A little here and a little there, you don't have to spend a lot of money (yet). I'll even let you try me for free the first few times around. Just imagine all the fun and all the parties, and you can turn on some of your friends so they can join in on the fun. Why deal with all the cares of life when they can just disappear in a puff of smoke? (Pretends to blow a puff of smoke) What do you say to that? Hmmmmmmm? [Addiction pulls on chin as if pulling a beard in a comical way. When the attention shifts back to the auctioneer he/she should look even more surprised that someone made an even better offer and is hastily trying to end this] Auctioneer: (Speaking to soul as if trying to convince him/her) Well, that offer sounds even better than the last one. So what do you say to that? (Wishes the auction will be over with already) [Satan is a main character so his entrance should be dramatic, a loud thundering sound should shake people out of their seats and some creepy music could be playing in the background] Satan: (Standing hastily in protest) Hold on now! I have an offer no one can refuse! (proudly while laughing) [Satan can actually be walking around the audience trying to frighten people making funny faces but should go up to the front when it is his turn to speak] Auctioneer: (Looking frustrated) Ok spit it out, let's hear this tempting offer of yours.(Should be looking up in hopelessness) [This is one of the main dialogues in the play so all attention should be fixed on the character, he walks around the soul looking it up and down as he speaks] Satan: (Tempting the soul) Well now my little friend, you're probably wondering what I can possibly offer that could sound any better than the previous offers. The truth is that the auctioneer and the World and Addiction all work for me. I'm at the root of all the evil in the world and I'm at the root of all addictions. When you choose to serve them you are actually serving me, isn't that right World and Addiction? (Sarcastic look) [Addiction and world should both get up together and bow very low towards satan] Addiction: (While Bowing) Yes master you are so right hahahahaha! (Evil laugh)
World: (While bowing) Yes master the fools have no idea whatsoever hahahahaha! (Evil laugh) [satan the World and Addiction should all be laughing together hysterically even heckling the audience to get boos and jeers] Satan: (Looking confident) So since there are no better offers I'll be coming up now to claim this miserable wretch of a soul. (Hatefully) Then I'll be on my way to claim another one. This is such hard work. (Stretch and yawn) [Now the auctioneer is desperate but also glad that this is almost over] Auctioneer: Surely there must be someone that can offer something better for this dear and lovely soul. isn't there anyone? (Pause) Well in that case I'll be turning the soul over to satan at the count of three......One.....Two (Stop)
[Before the count of three Jesus makes a grand entrance Shouting I do very loudly. All lights should be on now. Satan, world and Addiction look terrified and are trying to find a place to run. Children dressed as angels with swords could chase them around the audience and this will produce a lot of laughs but this is the climax of the play so shift the focus back to Jesus once everything settles down] Jesus: (Triumphantly) I DO!!! (Pause for 3 seconds) I have a better offer! [The audience should be responding to this in a dramatic way, this is the cue for satan and world and addiction to start moving away slowly] Auctioneer: (Mocking) World, Addiction, satan, where are you going? The auction isn't over yet!! [This is the cue for the Angels to pursue the world and addiction and satan aound the audience) Satan: (While Fleeing) I forgot we had a previous engagement, but we had a lovely time, gotta run now...ta ta! [This is where the running around the audience can be very funny like a scene from the keystone cops with the angels chasing them around] Auctioneer: (Relieved) Well Jesus...since there's no one else let's hear your offer! [Auctioneer should leave the front and Jesus walks up to the soul and adresses the audience] Jesus: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. This is what I have to offer (Pause) take it or leave it. If you accept my offer you must reject the world and addictions and repent of your evil ways and you will be mine because I payed the ultimate price for you on the cross at Calvary. [pause for reaction, auctioneer runs up to the front joyfully, a nice twist would be for the auctioneer to repent as well] Auctioneer: Well soul what do you say to that offer? [All the attention shifts to the soul as he stands in front of Jesus to say the sinners prayer while facing the audience] Soul: I say yes to Jesus. (Pause for 3 seconds) I reject the world and I reject addictions and I reject satan and I repent of my sins. (screams of no no no from the back of the audience from satan addiction and world) I ask you to forgive me Lord. I accept you as my personal Savior and I open my heart to you and ask that you write my name in the Lamb's book of life. Thank you Lord for saving me, Amen [The soul falls on his knees and sobs as he weeps and Jesus takes him by the hand and embraces him] Jesus: Come my child and let me remove the heavy yoke of bondage from you and the chains that bind you. Let me wipe away your tears and remove the filthy garments from you. (an angel can bring a robe) Here is a clean white robe without spot and without blemish and I will provide for all of your needs and will never leave you or forsake you. This is what i have to offer to all that will receive it. Come and accept my offer. (Pause) It won't cost you a thing because I already paid the price! [There should be a pause as the audience responds and each character should come to the front one by one and take a bow. Once each character has taken a bow all of the characters together should take a group bow and the floor should be turned over to the Pastor or Master of Ceremonies.] [Great time for an altar call!]
