Message To Dads Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. Titus 2:6 (NIV)
The Apostle Paul instructs Titus to be an example of self-control. This was important because many in Ancient Greek society, not unlike today, did not see the important role that fathers have in setting a godly example for their children. Today, our understanding of the important role that Dads play in the lives of their children has improved considerably. However, many children are still raised in families where men have neglected or abandoned their responsibility as husband and father.
Paul reminds us that as men we are to set a good example of Christian living. In verse 7, we see what kind of men we should be: In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned.
· Do What Is Good. Life is filled with choices. Obviously we can do the right thing or the wrong thing. As fathers, we should set an example of prayerfully seeking God's Will for our lives in all situations. When we do good it follows that good things will happen. By instilling that virtue in our children we lead them to the good things that God has planned for them.
· Show Integrity. Often in doing right, we must choose the more difficult or less popular path. Integrity is about having our convictions match our actions, in other words, we walk our talk. The old adage "Do as I say not as I do" doesn't apply. Our actions and words are to be one and the same.
· Speak Well. Paul instructs Titus to have "seriousness and soundness of speech" That doesn't not mean we are to be stern and lack humor and a sense of fun. Rather God has given us the gift of joy and laughter. Being able to laugh about things creates a warm and comfortable atmosphere in our homes. Our homes also should be a place where things of importance and of consequence can be discussed. Our speech should also be encouraging and uplifting.
It is important for us Dads to know that we have young eyes and ears paying attention to us. It is our responsibility to build for them a solid foundation of faith and character. We must actively set the example in our home of faith and commitment to God. To do less would be to short-change our children.
May God Bless your efforts as a Dad! It truly is a great experience! |
