Have you ever wished that the doodles you made while talking on the phone could be more than mere doodles? I have always had a desire to be more of an artist than a doodler. So what did I do? I enrolled in a drawing class at a downtown art & materials store. I'm almost finished with the six-week basic drawing course, but I can honestly say that I'm a better artist than a doodler now. Chris, the instructor, has the God-given talent to bring out the artist that hides in each of us. I don't want to say that I'm now an expert at drawing (see the drawing of my Fender Telecaster above); in fact, I'm far from it. Like anything else worth doing, it will take time and practice to become good at it.
On another subject, I was reading the Bible the other day and I came across this familiar passage: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:3) Jesus always had something against those who were "proud in the spirit", the opposite of being "poor in the spirit". One Bible commentator explains it this way: those who are poor in spirit actually "recognize their poverty in spiritual things and have allowed Christ to meet their needs..." To me, this Scripture means that the ones who continue to strive in their walk with Christ will be blessed along the way.
So, let me connect the two thoughts. The things of value that we seek are worth striving for. Chris says to his beginning art students, "All great artists started with the basics that we will learn in this class." They became great because they started at the beginning and practiced what they learned. Christians become better Christians because they start at the beginning and practice what they've learned. They grow in Christ as their walk with Him continues.
The lesson? Be patient with those who are just beginning...weren't you there once? |
