What Is Truth (part 3)

In the distance you see a lonely shepherd on a hillside. As you make your way to him you see a lion crouching near a sheep that had wandered from the flock. The shepherd watches quietly, unmoving. You realize like the shepherd that it is too late for this unfortunate sheep. It is too far away and death is moments away.

The lion lunges toward the sheep when a loud "Stop!" pierces the air. The lion is only a few feet away from the sheep when it stops. The lion looks at the shepherd with raging eyes and a terrifying roar challenges him. The sheep is oblivious to what is taking place as it grazes and actually get closer to the lion. The shepherd walks toward them. The lion roars once again and then turns away. With his staff the shepherd nudges the sheep toward the flock.

When you meet the shepherd he invites you to spend time with him. You tell him how you gave all for truth and all you received was a seed. Telling this to him made you suddenly feel foolish. But he tells you you are wise.

"Not really. I don't know what to do with it. I know it needs to be planted but I am unsure where. I am looking for another oasis much like the one where my journey began."

"If you are looking for an oasis in the desert why have you left the desert?"

"I'm not sure."

"Do you think you are getting closer to what you are searching for?"

"I don't know."

You then share your experience in the valley. How the voice promised light in exchange for your seed. But when you prayed light came and you saw that it was leading you to destruction.

"Yes, in the valley of the shadow of death only true light is found thru prayer."

Such a simple man, this shepherd, but you are drawn by the quiet words he speaks.

Eventually, you get around to asking him about what had taken place earlier with the straying sheep and the lion.

"Why couldn't the sheep see the danger?"

"Why did the lion stop and the sheep ignore when you yelled, "Stop!"?

"Why did the lion walk away from you instead of attack you?"

"Listen", spoke the shepherd.

A minute passes. Another. I was listening but he was not saying anything.

Finally, he speaks, "Now look around."

I gaze about at the same grass, rocks, and sheep scattered below.

"What do you see?"

I was about to answer but he was not paying attention to me. Looking in the direction he was staring I saw a figure lying on the ground.

"I see who you see."

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Selah...Pause and calmly think on this!
