I am sure that this thought has occurred to you at some point in your Christian faith and development. How could the Israelites miss their Messiah? After all, I imagine that it was not that difficult to figure out. There was so much evidence available even to the most skeptical of person it would be hard to deny. Have you ever tried to put yourself back in that time period? Have you ever imagined yourself to be a disciple, or maybe a member of the Sanheedrin, or just an ordinary person living in Judea at the time of Christ? I have and I asked myself if I was there what would my response be? Who would I say that Christ is? Would have I recognized Him as the Messiah? Would I be one of those to say He was a prophet, or a good teacher? Would I be the one to pick up stones to throw at Him as He announced that He was here to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord? Would I be a person like the woman who anointed Jesus with expensive perfume and wiped his feet with her hair to show her love and devotion to him. Or would I be like the Simeon the Pharisee who witnessed such an extraodinary event and would I shudder and question the holiness of the man who was not bothered by such affection but rather seemed to enjoy it? Would I be like Zacheuss or would I be like Judas? Would I be among the crowd that followed Jesus around just to see what He could do for me. Would I be one of the crowd that shouted Crucify him! Being a Minister today, I ask myself, what if I was a religious Jew of Christ’s day, who would I be like what would I be like? Would I be what the New Testament calls a secret disciple Like Nicodemus or Joseph of Arimethia? Or would I have been running the show and fueling the fire seeking the demise of the rebel Jesus of Nazareth Like Caiphas or Saul of Tarsus? I wonder if I would be able to follow Jesus then. I wonder what it really would really cost to believe. If today I believe and I haven’t seen! Surely, I would believe having seen with my own eyes the miracles of Jesus! How could I be so blind? How could I resist such wonderful revelation! Before I can jump to such a conclusion, I have to search my heart. Could it be possible that in my current spiritual condition, if the Messiah was to come into my church or world in this day and time, could I miss Him? Would I miss Him? That is the heart and message of this blog. When Jesus came into this world, he was rejected by the very ones that should have recognized him. When Herod asked the Priests and Scribes where the Messiah would be born they knew. When Jesus was on trial and He answered "before Abraham was I AM" they knew Him not! The religious parties of that day by in large rejected the Messiah that was there to save them. They were the Pharisee, the Saducee, and the Scribe. All of these Religious sects encountered Jesus. Some individuals responded positively, most did not. I believe the same spirit of religion that was alive then is alive and well today in Christian circles. The same Religious spirit that caused the Jews to miss their Messiah is causing many well-intentioned Christians to reject how God is moving today in our world. I would challenge all believers to not be so quick to dismiss what could be God. Just because things don’t conform to your way of thinking I would be careful not to call what is of the Holy Spirit Satanic. What is the sin of blasphemy? Ascribing the work of God to being the work of Satan. Gamiel when the Sanhedrian arrested the disciples for preaching in Jerusalem warned the Jews that if this movement of Jesus was from God then they would be fighting against God. If it was not of God then it would come to nothing. If God was to do something different in your church this week that was not normal, or even comfortable would you accept it or reject it? Sometimes I think that things haven’t changed very much at all and that the heart of man always doubts, always tries to figure things out, and excercise his natural faculties and his carnal mind when it comes to the things of God. I would challenge those who took time to read this to keep an open mind to what God could be doing. I know that I would hate to miss a move of God because I didn’t understand it or feel comfortable with it. |

| Great post I hope I would but there were allot of people saying they were the Christ and putting on a show at doing Miracles! Here is a question if Jesus came to day dress the same as the rest of us or going on T.V. preaching and doing miracles and all we knew was that he was a carpenter name Joshua. Would we think He was just a T.V. preacher looking for money? Maybe Jesus been around us all and we just could not see him! |

| All I could thing of when reading this was this song:Would I know You now, if You walked into the room?If You stilled the crowd, if Your light dispelled the gloom? And if I saw Your wounds, touched Your thorn pierced brow.I wonder would I know You now?Would I know You now, if you walked into this placewould I cause You shame, Would my games be Your disgraceor would I worship You, fall upon me faceI wonder would I know You nowOr have the images I've painted so distorted who You arethat even if the world was looking they could not see You, the real YouHave I changed the true reflection to fulfill my own designMaking You what I want, not showing You forth divine. Divine.Would I miss You now if You left and closed the doorwould my flesh cry out "I don't need You anymore"or would I follow You, could I be restored I wonder, I wonder will I ever learn?I wonder would I know You now |

remember also, He spoke in parables to the Jews, and He did this because He knew that their hearts were hardened, and if He spoke plainly, their eyes and ears would be opened, and their hearts would be healed and they would believe. Joh 12:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. |

| Excellent post, Todd!"I believe the same spirit of religion that was alive then is alive and well today in Christian circles. "You are so right! We would all like to think we would have recognized Jesus, but it seems the religious people recognized him least, because they had preconceived notions of how they expected everything to be. Great questions to ponder! |

| Interesting post- I have often pondered the same question. Would I know Him??? I pray that I would and that as one of His sheep I will hear His voice... |

| Todd, I've given this thought before too. Of course, scripture says the Jews were blinded by God, so they wouldn't recognize him. And this for a purpose, and a mighty important one too. I wonder what purpose God might have in mind for blinding me to my Savior? Does he ever do that now? |
|
|
| oh wow Brother Todd I've wondered about this too. Mike Ive never heard that before about the blinding. Where in scripture does it say that? I feel like another new understanding is coming on. Hehe. Great post Brother Todd! Bless you. :0) |

| My Dear Brother Todd as always you have truly hit the nail on the head here. You said:That is the heart and message of this blog. When Jesus came into this world, he was rejected by the very ones that should have recognized him. When Herod asked the Priests and Scribes where the Messiah would be born they knew. When Jesus was on trial and He answered "before Abraham was I AM" they knew Him not! The very ones that should be recognizing JESUS today in our generation still fail to realize Who He is. The *I AM* that Jesus said He was...gave us a clue that He in fact was the same God Who brought the children of Israel through the Wildnerness, and was the same God that was there in the begininning. For in the beginning was THE WORD...and the Word was with GOD....and the Word was GOD. Jesus Who came in His Fathers *Name* tried to tell us that His Fathers Name is *JESUS*....I submit to you Body of Christ...that they are One in the same.....Brother Todd said:if the Messiah was to come into my church or world in this day and time, could I miss Him? Would I miss Him?My friends I submit to you that when Jesus went to church...He went to church on the *Sabbath Day*....If you wanted to meet Jesus at *church* and you went on *Sunday*....you would have missed your hour of visitation. GOD blessed the 7th day and sanctified it, not man, and He hasn't changed. He's the same God yesterday...today...and forevermore! When Jesus returns again...He is coming at the 7th Trump....the Last Trump...after the tribulation period...the antichrist is coming at the 6th Trump. Will you recognize the real JESUS when *He* comes, or will you think the *instead of Jesus*...The *antichrist* is Him?Jesus the Holy One of Israel came into this world for the *Lost Sheep* of the House of Israel...the Jews were just one tribe of the House of Israel...Judah....there are eleven more tribes scattered abroad...And even though He came to His own, they received Him not...but now to as many as receive Him, to them gives He the power to become the Sons of God. So the invitation is open to all...The Jew..The entire House of Israel . . .The Greek...The Gentiles...to all (smile)Do we really know *Who* He is....Brother Todd said:The same Religious spirit that caused the Jews to miss their Messiah is causing many well-intentioned Christians to reject how God is moving today in our world. I would challenge all believers to not be so quick to dismiss what could be God. Just because things don’t conform to your way of thinking I would be careful not to call what is of the Holy Spirit Satanic. I say.... Selah....Pause and calmly think on that! It's getting late in the day my sisters and brothers. May we all ponder this excellent blog posted by our dear Brother Todd.Peace & Blessings,Sister Margie |

| Excellent blog, dear Brother Todd! I have a comment concerning the ancient Jews and the current Jews and their reasoning for dismissing Jesus as the messiah. First, history tells me that the ancients rejected Jesus because of the Hebrew word "Messiah". This word, used in their own book of "Law", told them to expect a man anointed by God (actual translation of "messiah"). Their picture was to imagine a man who would arrive in robe, crown and jewels, a golden chariot and lordly majesty (How else would God anoint His chosen one? Certainly a baby born to poor parents in a stable would not do!) This messiah would be able to wave away oppression (Rome?) and bring peace on earth (they were thinking about the peace that the world brings, not as Jesus brought to all who believe). There was another reason why the early Jews did not accept Jesus. There were more than a few "religions" cropping up all over the place at the time of Jesus. But Judaism was considered by the Jews a stand-alone religion. There was no other. Much to their chagrin, there were cults, mysterious religions and even many unorthodox deviations of Judaism. And the Jesus movement was considered blasphemous by the Jews and one of many silly cults rising up amongst the people of the land. ("Christians" a term that developed from the Jesus movement and first used in Antioch was not, at first, a kind description of it's followers.) Secondly, Jews reject Jesus as Savior today because...well...for some of the same reasons as the ancients...plus the fact that they do not recognize the New Testament claims. So, in practicality, they are still expecting the messiah. We really can't think too badly of the Jews, though, because today's society can closely identify to their reasoning: there are many religious entities that appeal to America's senses and desires. And if one has never read the New Testament or ignores it's truth, then people just flounder around looking for their "messiah". I don't know how this relates to your blog, Brother, but so be it! |
