So we have completed our study through Hebrews at the EHC shelter, so it's time for a review. In order to prep for the review I though I would blog about each of the sections.
The author of Hebrews in unknown, though its grammatical structure in the Greek is very similar to Luke, yet its ideas seem to be very similar to Paul's. One theory is that the letter was originally written in Hebrew by Paul, and Luke later paraphrased it into Greek.
(v 1:1-3) Jesus is identified as how God is speaking to humanity (through what Jesus said and how he lived). He is heir of all (the End), author of the World (the Beginning), the perfect reflection of God, and upholder of the universe. He atoned for sin and now sits at the right hand on high.
(v 1:4-13) Jesus is contrasted with the angels, and shows Jesus' superiority. This may seem weird to us, but angels were understood to be the most powerful forces in existence, the power behind natural forces and even governments: * Jesus is a Son, Angels are Servants * Jesus is Begotten, Angels are Made * Angels worship Jesus * Jesus is the originator and sustainer, Angel are simply ministering spirits
(v 2:1-4) It's made clear so the audience: How can we neglect/ignore such a great salvation? We have witnesses, God gave signs/wonders/miracles, gift of the Holy Spirit are also given. |
