1:35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples; 1:36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" 1:37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 1:38 Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" 1:38 + 1:39 He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. Many of us enjoy adventures. It's one of the reasons that "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is one of the most popular movies this summer. I think that somewhere inside of us we see ourselves as Indiana Jones, moving into the unknown and wondering what's around the next corner. Either that or we all really think the Bullwhip is cool. The Christian faith is just that kind of adventure. When Jesus is calling his first disciples he does not give them a detailed agenda with well reasoned support. His call is simple; "come and see", "follow me". It's an invitation to know Him personally and witness the coming of the Kingdom of God. It is an invitation to a journey of adventure. But this kind of adventure is a little different. It is the adventure of not only seeing and participating in the transformation of the lives of others but into our own lives as well. True faith will always move quickly out of the intellectual realm into the practical. Watching what a person does tells you more about what that person believes than any set of theological propositions. The Gospel of Jesus Christ shines forth when we take time out of a busy schedule to help a neighbor cut down a tree damaged by a storm. It shows when an offer of free babysitting is given to a young, overworked couple who desperately need a night out. It's present in the laughter and food shared around a table of family and friends. True faith is an adventure of love and service, the likes of which trump any cinematic blockbuster. Join the adventure! Live out the Journey! Come and See!
