| To Live is Christ (Updated) |
|
| |
1:21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Last night I had a wonderful Christian sister ask me about "purpose." She asked me what my thoughts were on the subject. Of course after thinking upon it for almost 24 hours now since our , this verse has come to mind. Phillipians 1:21 is a "life" verse. We all have favorite verses and verses that mean so much to us as they have been tested and found to be true. However, a life verse is a verse that directs us on how to live. This verse Phillipians 1:21 is perhaps one of the most concise and power packed verses in the Bible.
To live is Christ. What does that mean? To me it means that my life is all about Christ. My goals, my aspirations, my pleasures, my friends, my family, my hobbies, my social life, my career, my money, etc... is to be flavored and colored by Jesus Christ. When Paul is talking about to "live is Christ" it means that our life is wrapped up and consumed with the passion and pleasure of Jesus Christ. It means that I can no longer live for myself. That I can not live for my own wants and desires, what makes me happy and what makes me comfortable, but rather what makes Christ happy, and what makes Him comfortable is to be my purpose in life. Many Christians unfortunately have this verse turned around backwards. Many live there life like this: "To live is gain and to die is Christ." That makes sense doesn't it? When on this earth many of us are chasing after the things of this world. Though sometimes it is money, (an obvious choice), there are literally a myriad of other options this world offers for us to gather unto ourselves. Some of us live for pleasure. What makes me happy? That is what I want! Some of us live for affirmation. We are totally enraptured with other's thoughts and opinions of us and we eventually become slaves to their applause and acceptance. For others it may be their body. To look good, to be fit and trim. For some they chase after things. Houses, cars, boats, toys etc.... Some of us even make our family, our mate, our children the focus of our lives. I am sure you have heard someone say, "Life is ____________ the rest is just details." For the Christian we should fill that blank with Jesus Christ. Life is Jesus Christ and the rest is just details. Sounds fanatical doesn't it? Well it should! God calls us to love Him with all of heart, soul, mind and strength. To love Him with all that we are and all that we have and with all that we do. Unfortunately we get trapped in the things of this world and when we die, we expect to see Christ. I suppose this is a huge paradigm shift for some and for others is it elementary. Our lives here in this world merely set the stage for our eternity. This world is not our home, we are strangers and sojourners on our way to another world called Heaven. I encourage each of you who read this to realize that this world is not all that there is. This world is passing away, and so are you and I. Our life is a vapor and we need to focus our life on Christ. To please Him, to honor Him, to bring glory to Him while on this earth and in this body. Our purpose first and foremost is to live for Christ - however that may shake out in your personal walk of life. But, make no mistake that Jesus is to be our passion, our priority, and purpose and everything else in this life is just details.
To die is gain: Jesus reminded us to not lay up treasures upon this earth, where moth and rust can destroy it, but rather to lay up treasures in Heaven. How do we do that? Well the Lord teaches us that no small thing goes unnoticed by Him. When we bless the "least of these" we bless the LORD. When we minister to the hungry, and the orphans, the widows, and prisoners we minister to Jesus Himself. If we would even give a cup of cold water to a prophet we would receive a prophet's reward. The Lord also taught us that where our treasures are that is where your heart is. If you truly treasure the things of God you heart will be with God. If we treasure the things of this world then that is where our affection and loyalty will be. Now heaven is going to be awesome! The Bible tells us that "eye has not seen nor has ear heard nor has it entered into the heart of man what God has in store for those that love Him." Wow! What a promise! What does God have in store for us? A place of peace, bliss, and glory! A place where there is no sorrow, or death, or crying. A place that is beautiful, with streets of Gold walls of every kind of precious jewel, a crystal sea. I am sure we can't even comprehend all that will be waiting for us in Heaven. Paul, knew this as he stated with conviction: "For I reckon that the, the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory that shall be revealed in us." Whatever we experience here on this earth will pale in comparison to what God has for us in Heaven. I have heard it said, and I believe it to be true: "That for the Christian the most Hell he will have to endure is here on this earth. For the unbeliever the most Heaven he will experience will be here on this earth." I think we all can agree that this earth is great! There is so much here to enjoy! But, yet we need not to get too attached to it. For this is not our home! No matter how bad it gets here though and it can get bad, we always have the hope of heaven. It will get better! It doesn't get any more comforting and reassuring than that! One day, we all will stand before our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and hopefully hear, "Well done my good and faithful servant enter into the joy that I have prepared for you!" Yes, to live is Christ and to die is gain!

It's great to have our priorities and purpose in alignment, but somehow mine keep getting jumbled up. I think that's why we need each other.
Thanks Bro Todd |

| Eye has not seen nor ear heard nor has it entered into the heart of man what God has in store for those that love Him. To stand before Him, one day and hear Him say well done my good and faithful servant enter into the joy that I have prepared for you. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory that shall be revealed in us. If we suffer with Him then we shall reign with Him. When we see Him, we shall be like Him. He has gone to prepare a place for us that where He is we shall be also. It willl be worth every sacrifice you ever made in this life for what Heaven has to offer. There will be no suffering, no death, every tear will be wiped away There will be no night there for the Lord shall be our light. It will be worth it all! Streets of Gold and a crystal sea. |

| Charlie: You are so right about getting our priorities messed up. We do need each other to keep us focused and in line. No body is a super saint, I don't care who you are! But, we can at least strive for the prize of the high calling in Christ Jesus. We definitely need Christian fellership. |

| DOC: I added the second part of the verse to the blog I hope you take time to notice. I was so fired up about the living for Christ part, that Heaven seemed like an obvious reward! Yes, it is like the Garden of Eden, so much good for us to choose from, but our curious nature and fallen nature attracts us to that which is bad for us. |

| Robin my Livewire friend: You know it is not really all that hard of a truth. It is kind of like that line in the Ratattouie movie: " Once you get past the gag reflex the food possibilities are endless." Kind of like the Scripture. Once you get past the Painful truth of Self crucifixion everything else is kind of easy. Bless you too! You are a great writer by the way, I don't know if I have told you enough. Anyone reading this needs to check her writings out. |

Juan: Yes indeed the other details are important. We have to learn somehow to balance these and keep Jesus at the forefront of our life. "Jesus told us to Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto us." Thanks for encouraging comment! You are a blessing to me Juan, so earnest it is refreshing! |

"That for the Christian the most Hell he will have to endure is here on this earth. For the unbeliever the most Heaven he will experience will be here on this earth."
An excellent point!
Let us set our sights on His kingdom - on His will for our lives - for His glory and all else will fall into place. For how can we even know our needs until we see things through the proper perspective of promoting His kingdom not just to the unbelievers, yet in our own lives first.
Thank you for posting this blog! |

| You commented on a song I put in a blog today, so I went to your mychurch. I have spent much time here listening to your music and reading about you. This is the first blog I read written by you. I hope that I can print it out for others to see. I would love for my brother, WJ Orr to read it because he is going through such a trail right now. We need Jesus during the good times and especially during the difficult times. If WJ could latch onto the words you posted, it would lessen his burden. God can and will carry him through this life. WJ is 66 years old and recently had a below the knee amputation due to diabetes. He is on renal dialysis due to kidney failure. His other leg is compromised due to clogged blood vessels. His finances are hurting due to a bad marriage that wiped him out and his failing health. Please pray for him and tell others to pray also: for “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16). |

gojolly: Did you know that I used to live in Columbus and Phenix City? Any way, thank you, for your kind words, and yes, it is so hard to go through such difficult times. It is hard to keep our faith up, but we have to trust Him through it all. Father, Right now, I ask you touch WJ in his body, his mind, and his spirit. I ask Lord that you encourage him, and heal him in Jesus' name. Surround him with your Love Father and bless Him with your nearness. In Jesus' name Amen. |

5:14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. 5:15 And he died for all, that those who live might live no longer for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 5:17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you would. 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law. He doesn't exist for us, we exist for Him. We do have something to do, but that is limited to a choice; we chose whether we present our members as slaves to sin, or as slaves to God. That is the absolute limit of our freedom. A slave of all that is Good or a slave of death. Great things to meditate on Brother Todd, it's wonderful that all of life becomes a parable; the Lord provokes us though people that we talk to. So He moves on a sister to ask you about purpose, and then speaks a living word to you about it which you share with us, and we add pages to the book mentioned in Malachi 3:16. Isn't He awesome! :-) Yours in Him, Craig |

| The beauty of it all is that He allows us to participate in His divine work and purpose, thus giving me purpose and direction for my life. What is man that Thou are mindful of him? Behold what manner of love the Father has given unto us that we should be called the sons of God? And is sons then heirs, heirs with God and joint heirs with Christ. It is truly a wonderful concept to meditate upon and yes sir He is awesome! Such thoughts are too great for me! |
