| Fiery Serpents |

Blessings and victories abound in these verses, as the Israelites near their destination. The Christian should read and understand the illustration given by Christ 21:4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way. 21:5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. 21:6 And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. 21:7 And the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. 21:8 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live. 21:9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived. which was revealed by the Lord in His conversation with Nicodemus 3:1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 3:2 the same came unto him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that thou doest, except God be with him. 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God! 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew. 3:8 The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hearest the voice thereof, but knowest not whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. 3:9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? 3:10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou the teacher of Israel, and understandest not these things? 3:11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and bear witness of that which we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 3:12 If I told you earthly things and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you heavenly things? 3:13 And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, `even' the Son of man, who is in heaven. 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up; 3:15 that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life. 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.
A spirit of discontent prevailed among the Israelites and they bitterly found fault with God, and Moses (Numbers 21:5). Consequently, the marvelous protection of God from the desert dangers was withdrawn. Until this time, there was no record that anyone had been bitten by a serpent. (Note Deuteronomy 8:15.) The Israelites’ need for the Lord’s protection was realized after thousands of them were bitten by fiery serpents, and the dying Israelites cried out to Moses: We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against you; pray to the Lord, that He take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people (Numbers 21:7). They deserved to die; but, when they confessed their sin, God provided a brazen serpent which represented the One who would be the subsitute to take their place.
The brazen serpent was made from the same type of material used for the Brazen Altar where the sacrifices were offered. Bronze was symbolic of the judgment of God against sin. All who believed the promise of God’s Word and looked to the brazen serpent were healed. For He made Him to be sin for us, Who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him (II Corinthians 5:21).
In the private conversation that Jesus had with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish council, Jesus referred to this historic event and said: Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. . . . And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:1,5-6,14-15). Jesus became our substitute for our sins. Nicodemus could not understand why there was a need to be born again. So the Lord revealed to him the necessity of a spiritual new birth just as He does to everyone today.
Mankind was poisoned by sin which was introduced by that old serpent, called the Devil (Revelation 12:9), and sin’s painful bite torments its victims to their spiritual death. Salvation is within the reach of all who respond to Jesus Who was lifted up for our sins. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life (Romas 5:10).
A Thought from Psalms: 25:5 Guide me in thy truth, and teach me; For thou art the God of my salvation; For thee do I wait all the day.

| I that story because it is filled with so much application. What is so amazing about that is that some would not look upon the snake on the stick. Amazing! They died because they would not believe or would not obey. How true is that of humanity today? If we would only look upon Jesus and what He did on the cross for us by faith, we would be healed of the sin that is killing us. Sadly, some are either too proud or too full of doubt. Good sermon Cindy Lou! |
