We have really been reaching out to the people of Couti. Doing open airs in the streets with the motorcycles, and things like that. It is nice to be in a place for longer then 3 days. We have been painting the corps for a few days, and being out in the community, so the people know us now. They say hi when we walk by and smile, and it feels good. The girls of our group have developed some unwanted attention from a few particular men. But we just tell them that God loves them. We have been able to visit the nursing home here. When we got there we met a lady who had an American accent, and that was so strange for us to hear. She was in-charge of the home. She was from Vermont, a nun, and had been in the Dominican for almost 35 years. She had heard of the Salvation Army back home and was excited that we were there. The people in the home were wonderful. We did a short program for them, and they did not want to stop singing! And some of them we so feisty! One of the men, who was blind, said that the women of our group were the most beautiful women in the world. We visited with a young man who lives just down the street from the corps. He is dying of cancer and is only 27. He accepted Christ a few weeks ago, and the corps officers have been trying to meet with him regularly. It was such a wonderful experience that brought most of us to tears. We shared a few scripture passages with him and prayed. I do not think that any of us will ever forget that day.We have been able to have a few days off this week. One of the days we went to the river. It was so relaxing and fun. We all got some sun. We took a taxi to get there, which meant that about 20 people climbed into and in the back of a truck. But it was too expensive to take back, so we had to walk. We have learned to always wear good shoes, because we walk a lot. But its good for us, and we get to really see the country that way.We are staying at the corps in Cotui. Our beds are cots, and we sleep under mosquito nets because they are bad here. The electricity is not always on, and tends to go out often. We do not have running water, so we have to take bucket baths. It is very interesting. Joy, our leader from home, will be here on Monday. It will be a nice break to see someone from home. We all love and miss you all! Please keep praying for us. Pray for unity, and strength during these last 4 weeks. Thank you for all of your love and support! I’ll try to write again soon. |
