| So are you gonna tell me your name or what? |
|
| |
A lot of people on MyChurch and other websites use fictitious names (nicknames, made-up screen names, etc.) when they interact with others, as opposed to their real names. (Maybe you too?) Being anonymous (which literally means, without a name) means we can’t be known—well, at least not fully. There are a variety of reasons why people do this, some good (personal security) and some not so good (mischief). How well can you get to know someone who has withheld their name from you? Does anonymity present an obstacle to intimacy?
I happen to love names, so I admit my bias. I feel as though learning someone’s name shows an interest in knowing them, while the giving of their name to me shows interest in being known. It’s fun to greet people by name a week or so after meeting them and seeing the look of surprise at their name being remembered! it can mean a lot to someone when their name is remembered, after all a person’s name is a HUGE part of their identity! (Don't believe it? Imagine the shock of learning that a close friend had never given you their real name!)
Well, it turns out names are important to God too! Yes, he really knows each one of us!!
12:1 But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. Jesus also said:
10:20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." And...
10:3 He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. But perhaps best of all, God himself is not anonymous! God has given his name because he wants to be known!! The name of the LORD is revealed numerous times to numerous people throughout scripture. His people KNOW his name, and they KNOW him!
32:3 I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! (Hallelujah, can you believe the greatness of this???)
Names are really important!! So tell me, what’s your name? |

Did you know my first name is Samuel? Samuel Todd only bill collectors and my mom when she is mad asks for Samuel. LOL... A good name is better than great riches. Names are very important.
As a point though (not to be offensive) I find it kind of ironic that your picture is withheld. I imagine you to look more like the Captain than Ricky. So are you gonna show us your picture or what? |

Well Mr. Mike, I was really suprised when you remembered EVERY name I ever used here...that in itself says a whole lot about you...Names...LaTonya is my name...I get a ton of comments about my name change driving people crazy, but it's just a way me and my gal pals have fun...If I use a screen name on any other account it is for personal security...
As far as intimacy...it helps...and after a secure relationship is established most people will tell their names...being online though...you never know what kind of person is sitting on the other side of the computer...so most people will put their guard up only to bring it down after that trust is established...and yes it can be established without a name...Great questions and another great post...Bless you Mike! |

heh... when people ask for my name on websites, i tell them it's Krystal. Why? well, is it: a) personal security b) i like the name, but people refuse to call me Krystal (=P) or c) all of the above the correct answer is: C! if you guessed that, way to go! lol sorry about that, i just felt like being silly. what's really bad is that at the end of the school year everyone started calling me Diana and my friend (whose name is Diana) Patty. i was like, "what are you on?! how can you possibly confuse the two of us?!" it was funny, but insulting at the same time =P lotsa Christ love! ~Patty |

|
| Hi Patty, thanks for droppin in! Hey, Patty's a great name too. 30 yrs ago I had a wee crush on a girl by that name. Hey, personal security may be a valid concern, depending on which site you're on. I think.... With only your first name, exactly what can a hacker or other mischievous person do? (I don't know, I'm honestly asking?) |

well, that's true, but there's no such thing as being TOO safe, right? besides, online is the only place i can get people to call me Krystal (some shorten it to Krys) actually, that works out better, anyway. i get to go by both my real name and my "nickname" at the same time. it makes me feel pretty darn cool because i have two names lol let's see... i've got: Patty, Krystal, Patty-cake, Peppermint, Strawberry (<-inside joke), and Patty Leigh (my friend uses both my first and middle name for some strange reason) all of those nicknames make me feel really cool! the only nickname i've ever had that i didn't like was in 6th grade, my teacher called me Patricia. i HATED that! she wouldn't stop until my mom called and told her to. =P |

|
| My pleasure Mike...it's been a blessing for me getting to know you too...and the whole personal security thing isn't just about hackers and mischievous persons...it can also be about letting yourself be "out there"...it makes you vulnerable and that fear of rejection is there...that's just my opinion...we are after all a work in progress! |
|
|
| June 26, 2008 |
 |
|
|
ooh, good point LaT! being "out there" is scary! (kinda like this new avatar pic, that's about to no longer be "out there" lol)
So Patty, I will call you Patty. But I could also call you Krystal, which sounds like you would be happy either way. It's all about preferences. Yours! :-) |

Although the name on my birth certificate is Suzanne, I think Soozanne fits me better. It's a little strange, but still easy to figure out. Yup, that's me. Plus, people are less likely to refer to me as "Susan" when they see it. I don't know why, but that's the truth!
Most of the time, though, even in real life, people who love me call me Sooz, even if they don't spell it that way! ;-)

| My given name is Robin. The little story behind Birdie is that my pastor always gives people nicknames to help him remember their name when he first meets them...so we were nicknamed Birdie and HotDog (...my hubby is Bryan...Bryan Hot Dogs..get it? lol!) That was some 12 years ago...When I started writing professionally, my mentor advised me to google my name before I submitted anything to a publisher...it turned out that there was another writer on the east coast with my exact first, middle and last name...with a totally opposite message. She writes pagan/wiccan romance novels....so I had to ditch the real name and decided to become Birdie in print...so now Birdie really is my real name...leaving no room for the enemy to confuse my identity or my message. :) |

Hey Brother Mike. Just about a couple of days back I was thinking of people using anonymous names. The reason is I got a message from one such messenger, who created a profile here in mychurch just to write to me. Anyhow, coming back to your topic, My name is Ragland Jebaraj. My first name is actually the second name (family name) of one of the pioneering christians who reached this part of the globe from England. His name is Thomas Gajetan Ragland. My second name means ( Jebam in Sanskrit means prayer and Raj means King). Its a great honour to carry the legacy of one of the pioneering christians who visited our country through my name. |

Great blog. When I first joined MyChurch I used initials but not for long for I removed that page and did a new one using my name. This was my personal conviction I did not want to make people feel I was ashamed of being a Christian. I wasn't and I strive to be more Christ-like everyday. To know my name is written in the book, I thank the Lord the day He found me and His love surrounded my every being. God Bless. if we never meet upon this earth, and we stand faithful and true how wonderful to know that we'll meet in Heaven. |

Dear Mike,
I LOVE names! I love doing name studies. It's one of my favorite things. I believe that a name is something that is spoken over you and is apart of your identity in Christ. I mean goodness just look at me, my name Debora, means "the industrious nature of a bee." Holy Cow is this the truth! If you knew me personally you would see that nature ridden out in all of my behaviors.
Let me share a story with you...
I use to go by Debbie as a child. The only time Debora was used was when I was in trouble. So naturally, I hated my real name. I use to get so angry when people called me Debora that would very quickly and not so nicely correct them. During one of my God adventures I had a profound experience. I was laying down to take a nap in a new place. I was exhausted from closing one chapter and opening another. As I started to drift to sleep I heard "Debora" immediately I woke up. I looked around I saw nothing and no-one, so I drifted back to sleep. Then I heard "Debora...be still" I woke up again! I knew it was God, it was an awe inspiring deep sound like the depths of eternity and wind that never ends. It scared the living daylights out of me! But not a fear of someone breaking into the house, but a fear of God(for lack of a better term), one that you knew to respect Him. Sadly I thought, "I'm trying to! If you would stop waking me up." (it is still that rebellious side to me) Mike, it was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. God used my real name and it was beautiful! I loved the sound of God speaking my true name, so from then on, everyone was to call me by my true name. Interestingly enough I write this and I realize that God not only spoke my name but He spoke to the nature of me and my name "...be still." As a bee it is nearly impossible to be still. God is so cool!
But now, thus says the LORD, your Creator, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel, "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine! |

Mary, thanks for your post! Yes I was guessing, until you let slip your name at one point, and I've been calling you Mary ever since!!!! Love you too!
Ok then, another Cynthia it is! (but we can still use Cindy affectionately 'round here!)
Linda Grace, or simply Linda, nice to know you! (Armenia has a rich history, I think I'd love that place.)

| Debora, thanks for that scripture, it's perfect! And that's the thing, there are many more scriptures of God referring to people by name! Or telling how holy, precious, and wonderful is HIS name! I would have loved to include more scriptures but I fear my blog already has too many, at least more than usual. Those blue boxes kind of break up the flow of the text. So I hope we get a few more wonderful "name" scriptures. Wow what an experience you had too! I can imagine it left quite an impression on you! |

Sorry bout that Mike! thats the hopeless romantic creeping outta me... as soon as I saw the title of your blog, I remembered this quote from one of my favorite stories of all time!
ok now, back to the purpose of your blog - yes, names are quite intimate to me and they are an important and personal part of you...and when your name is remembered by someone, well I certainly can make you feel special, and I hope to impart that same feeling on others i meet when i remember their name..
BTW I was named after the love song "Tammy's in Love" - soundtrack for the 1957 movie "Tammy and the Bachelor" - my moms favorite movie.

My mama named me Vivian. I've had many nicknames over the years, and can always tell from where a long lost friend arise, based up what name I am called. In the early 90s while in college studing African and African American History, I dedided to change my name to represent my ancestorial place of origin, Africa. With the help of a friend, we read through a book of African names, and I choose three, based on sound alone. After choosing the three names, I then looked up the meaning. Aminata Shahiddah Njeri Gill means - "Like an anointed princess, who witnesses and upholds the faith........ and now married to Kenneth Johnathan Gill. Pastor Aminata |

Answering the question: No! :) Well maybe, but I think I've got a bit of a different opinion than others on this one. (Surprise, surprise?). There are many times in the Bible where God gives someone a new name because there previous name does not fit. Shannon/Barvubuela aludes to that above. In my case that's even more true. I couldn't tell you my birth name if I wanted to. If I had to guess I actually think it might be Scooter as I did see it once accidentally (but that's a different story and it was accidentally as I really don't care to know.). My adopted parents gave me the name Michael. It's a good name, although I rarely use it in full, usually opting for the shortened version like the 'n Laura person. As for my nickname here, I was actually given the nickname in high school at the job I was working. One morning, one of the guys shouted "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooorm" and it stuck. (For those of you old enough to remember Cheers, yes that Norm. And no the nickname had nothing to do with beer, but rather what my last name was and what my general demeanor was seen as.). On BBSs, Message Boards and such which are more than strictly informational (aka not work related ;) ), it's pretty much who I've been since. BTW if you've read this far you're probably thinking "Are you sure he didn't mean Cliff?" |

It seems to be the blog to misspell homonyms for guys that wanna be Mike. Although "were" to "wear" isn't exactly a homonym, "there" to "their" is. |
| Mike, I just wanted to come back and thank you for the post!!! I notice myself reading other's posts and saying their name and when I tell my hubby about a certain post, whether insightful or funny (he loves the funny ones), I can now give a name to some of the people and he relates better. Again, thanks!!!!!! |

DarkKnight -- this is especially for you (though I messaged this to you already as well). To change your display or profile name, do the following: click: "Home" (your Home view) then: "Edit profile" next: "Edit account settings" and then simply change your "Display Name" - it's easy, and you can do it as often as you like! |

| Hi Mike, cool blog. I was just sitting here giggling - I AM Stacey here and in real life but in college I was called Peppermint Patty because of the red hair. :) Seems that most nicknames come about as a description of the person or characteristic of a person as a few here have mentioned - never thought about it so closely. |

So in college, I'm sitting in the computer lab and I do a lookup on the system to see who is online (the long forgot "finger" command.) and see a name I knew. However it was a friend I knew from other circles and didn't realize was going to school. So I sent him an e-mail. He sent one back. This went on for a while (5 or 6 exchanges over a couple of weeks), until I get an e-mail from him asking, "Do I know you?". So while the name fit, the person was different. As it works out, I have no idea where that other friend ended up, but the person I was communicating with ended up being best man in my wedding. So Mike, do I know you? Well, I'll have to ask just to be safe... Who are you again? :) (I really wanted to work "These are not the droids you are looking for" into this post.) One final note on my main college account. I don't think I was Norm there. I believe I was actually "sir". That's because I could set it up in such a way that upon successfully completion of a command, it answered with "Yes sir". Or maybe that's just the way I set up my command prompt. It's been too long. In any case, I'm pretty sure there are several people in the computer lab who never did figure out why I would suddenly start giggling. |

I have really enjoyed this blog with all the comments. My name is Tamara but go frequently online by my nickname (for security reasons) of especialtea.
I was given my name by my 8 year old sister who wanted us to have the same initials and it was chosen out of a book of names. I prefer my given name Tamara to Tammy. |

Norm, I'm laughing about you emailing with someone who didn't know you ......I did the same thing but they never emailed back, but they learned alot about the inner workings of our family! Here's what happened. Son went to the Middle East...I was emailing him all the family goodies, LOL, and he wasn't replying....he'd had that same email military address for 11 years...well, they got another guy with same name evidently...and changed son's email address....son forgot to tell me, ROTFLOL!!!!!!! And my hubby has a lady who text messaged him about 10 times on his company phone about how wonderful the night before was!!!! He kept ignoring them...I finally told him to call her and let her know that she was texting the wrong phone. Talk about one embarrassed lady....but the text messages ended, LOLOLOL |

Cindy, oh my gosh!!!! Those are the funniestest stories!!!! LOLOL Cathy, good grief, you got it backwards, woman! This is the blog where you tell us your name, nicknames go on Joey's blog! lol Thanks for the comment, Zachary (aka Zach). Great to read your input here. And I TOTALLY understand the less and less moniker. I share the sentiment! Thanks for your input too, Tamara. I completely understand the desire to withhold certain info for personal security concerns. I pray those concerns are minimized on this site!!! (And I'm optimistic that they are!) Are your story of how you got your name is COOL! And very unique! Stacey, have always known you as Stacey....exactly the way I prefer it! :-) Hi Elizabeth! But I shall continue to call you Liz....if that's ok. It's easier to type!! |

| Mike, what was funny ( ya hafta know my hubby, he's a cut up!) is that when he called her, he told her that he was really glad she was enjoying her nights, but she might want to tell it to the guy she was with instead of a man she didn't know who couldn't appreciate the message! |

Well, let's see my name? Do you want the one from my real ID or my fake ID....just kidding! I was born David Wayne Binford not to be confuse with my dad whose middle name is Ross. Nowadays I go by David, Dave, DW.
My family especially the East Texas side still call me David Wayne, but only they can get away with that! Just because when I was a kid it was easier to distinguish between the two of us. For a while I was known as Little David and my dad as Big David but when I grew to be taller than him that stopped.
My wife calls me DW. Officially I go by David W Binford. |

This was a post that spoke to me. Thank God for you Mike. Your blog exposes areas within me which i have ignored for long.. There is something else.. I believe that people who dont use their names online may have bigger issues than what may seem to me. Sometimes they ARE doing the right thing, we may never know, until we know them up close. And you are right, it is SO much better to call a person by name..it is Personal and Special, both to us and God. So thanking God that you are Mike and not "the purple warrior" or something.. :D Lots of Love Aravind, not a dark knight. :) |

My name is Megan. It is nothing that special, but it is the name that my family had chosen for me. I am not to sure why that name is what they chose. Hmm, may have to look into it and do a blog on it we will see. The meaning of the name Megan is Pearl. The origin of the name Megan is Welsh. No my family isn't Welsh, thought that you would like to know the meaning of my name. My full name is Megan Leanne Clarke. Nothing to fancy, but that is who I am. :-) |

| Yes, Megan. That is who you are --- a unique individual and important to the Lord Almighty! And special to us here too! ps... "Meghan" (slight variation) is my 2nd daughter's name, so I have a slight affinity for it, you could say. :-) |

Funny I should read this today... Yesterday's Children's Church lesson was on the names of God, a subject that just rocks!! I love reading through all His names! My full name is Jennifer. No middle name. For awhile I went by Jennifer Lynn, just for the fun of it. One year in high school I went by Jennifer Jericho and had people call me Jeri, but more often than not I forgot that was my "name" and didn't respond when addressed as such. :-) |
|
|
| July 07, 2008 |
 |
|
|
| Jeri? Yes Jen, you could be a Jeri. :-o I'll bet changing your name back then changed the entire way you saw yourself. Names are so important! |
|
|
| July 08, 2008 |
 |
|
|
| Family still calls me Jenny, the name I grew up with. It got shortened to Jen after I moved away from home. Not a conscious thing; it's just that my signature was J-E-N-(squiggly line), hence the new(er) moniker. I realized with the Jeri thing that I didn't really like that name... |
|
|
| July 08, 2008 |
 |
|
|
So you left the "-ny" back at home, eh Jen? Makes sense. It's good to see they kept it safe for ya too!
Oh, so we won't be calling you Jeri then! Not even in jest!! |

| My name is Sarah Ellen.Sarah is Hebrew for princess.Ellen means light, the bright one. It's funny when my family says my name, they run it all together with a Southeren twang it sounds more like Sarlen. Most of my relatives call me this, along with my best friend & husband when they want to be "cute."This was a really fun blog Mike.Haven't been on much lately and this was a fun blog to come back to. |

I love this post! and the comments...I use a handle a lot of times, mostly for security and personal reasons, but my I tend to sign my real name when I write to someone on say for example, this site. And, I agree that names are very important to me and to God...it is always so nice when someone does call you by name..it makes you feel that you matter to them.
Sometimes, I may wait a while to tell u my name until a few exchanges (there are a lot of kooks out there, no offense:-). My pic, now that is another story, lol...I love flowers! God bless. sis Penny |

Great post Mike!! I do feel the same way as most everyone here in that calling someone by their first name is alot more personal and intimate. But I do understand why some prefer using monikers or fake names. I have seen some of the "kooks" that Penny mentioned and I have seen what they can to do good people.
BTW: I do prefer being called Matt instead of my given name of Matthew; which means "Gift of God" |

Thanks for weighing in, Matt! Fortunately, MyChurch.org is relatively safe compared to other sites such as MySpace. Thanks for the tip on your nickname preference!
Penny, no offense taken, there are kooks on the 'net. This site has pretty tight controls though so the kooks are minimized. If you ever have a problem, simply Report em! (and they will be taken care of promptly)

It was gonna be Krista, but at the last minute in the hospital, my mom decided to name me after my grandma. My middle name is Jean after my dad (Gene aka Eugene). So there it is... I am Amy Jean! BTW, my grandfather has a funny name. he was from North Carolina and his name is Gilmer Genster Foster! LOL And his brothers name was Bascombe! I dont know what my greatgrandma was thinking!! |
