She lost control... She looked up from her dash, caught a glimpse of a huge black beast with the sun behind it blinding her. She swerved to miss it but lost control of her car and was jolted back and forth between the steering wheel and the seat. She kept screaming and trying to just hold on until it was over. In the middle of all this jolting the sound of crashing metal and shattering glass, her horn beeped every time her body was thrust up against it. She suddenly stopped screaming and felt totally calm. "It will be over soon...I promise." Her mind flashed back to a memory of him looking her right in the eye with the kindest smile and most comforting sound in his voice. He was holding her hands and they were waiting to hear from the Doctor. She was so nervous but when he spoke to her all her fears were gone. Suddenly, her rolling car slammed into a tree upside down and came an abrupt stop. The roof of her car was caved in and she was pinned inside. She managed to get her seat belt off and let her body fall on the ceiling of the car. As she tried to wedge her was back and forth out of the car she realized her left wrist wasn't working like it should. She held closed to her while trying to pull the rest of her body with her right arms. She slipped on the glass and fell against her wrist when she heard this horrible "CRACK" sound. Suddenly the pain was too much and she passed out. "It'll be over soon...I promise, babe." He said to her again. "I know... I'm just ready for it to be over now." she responded while smiling trying to cover up the anxiety her heart was really feeling. Suddenly the door opened and a nurse called out his name. They both looked at each other as he said to her "Here we go." As they took their seats in the Doctors office she noticed all the degrees and certificates Dr. Williams had on his wall. There were at least 6 or 7 of them but on his desk there was just 2 photos of his family. He was an older gentlemen and had been the family Doctor for years. She felt him take her had and let out a sigh and she knew then that he was just as nervous as she was. The Dr came in and said nothing for the longest time. They both knew this wasn't good... "Well, Doc." he said trying to lighten the mood.."what's up?" "Might I ask how long you two Kids have be married son?" "Well, not long sir, less then a year why?" he replied "I imagine you love her with everything in you, right boy?" "Of course sir, she's been there with me through everything and I know no matter what she'll be there til the end." "I see." responded Dr Williams. She kept silent and still as could be trying understand this casual dialog between the two and decipher what it all meant. "Well, boy...."as he cleared his throat and got the file out, "I wish there was a better way to tell you this...I wish there was a way tell both of you that there was a way out and it didn't have to be this way. Unfortunately I cannot. I will be perfectly honest with you son, you could fight this and put yourself through many experimental treatments and take a change on delaying or speeding up the inevitable. However....it's just that...the result of this illness is inevitable. I'm sorry but, there isn't much we can do." She looked over at him and clenched his hand tighter. He nodded his head and then stared down at the floor for the longest time. She found her mind being swarmed with awful and very painful thoughts of what was to happen next. Suddenly her mind went in a blur and she could hear sirens in the distance. "Are you okay?" Asked the voice of man standing over her. She could hear metal and broken glass shuffling around as the voice leaned down closer to her and in a comforting tone asked... "Ma'am, can you hear me?...it'll be over soon....I promise." |
