| How Shall They Hear? |
|
| |
Through Gates of Splendor and The End of the Spear are stories of young missionaries who attempted to reach a remote people group in the Ecuadorian Rain-forest. It is a story of passion and compassion and is worth the read and worth watching the movie. There are tremendous lessons to be learned and will inspire and motivate those who read to give all that they have for the cause of Christ.
I First heard this story told me to me at a VBS when I was about 10 years old. The story left an indelible image upon me. To think that some people would be so courageous to even attempt to make contact and share the gospel with known headhunters! These men and women truly understood what Jesus meant when He said: "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it." Jim Elliott was quoted as saying, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." --Jim Elliott
This was not only a story of courage and faith, but it was a story of forgiveness. To know the wives went and made contact again with the same people that murdered their husbands. Not only did they share the gospel with them but they lived and dwelt among them! This story is all that is good about Christianity! People who are motivated by love and compassion, and people that actually practice forbearance and forgiveness. What marvelous example!
Today, let us reflect on the importance of missions. The apostle Paul wrote in Romans chapter10:
Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things! People need to hear the gospel. The gospel the good news of Jesus Christ is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes. How shall they believe if they have never heard? How shall they hear without someone to tell them? How will anyone tell them unless they go? Let us never forget that we all are missionaries. We all are sent into the world to carry the message of the cross. We are indeed what the Scriptures call us "ambassadors of God." Perhaps God may lead you next door or around the world who knows? But, as you go each and every day, whether it is across the street or across the country or across the world bring the love of Jesus with you. What makes this story so powerful is the fact that the missionaries did not just tell the Aucan Indians about God, they showed the Aucan's about God. Word and deed go together! Let us be people who are driven with a passion to share the gospel not matter the cost, yet let us live the gospel and model it before people so that they might glorify God when they see our deeds. Let us pray for our co-laborers around the world tonight that they might be fruitful in their work. Jesus told us to: "Pray ye the Lord of the Harvest, that He might send forth laborers into His harvest field." Mt 9:38 Who knows you just might find that the LORD will use you to answer that prayer. |

"The End of the Spear" "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." --Jim Elliott and I met Elizabeth Elliott in 1983 when God called me to be a missionary. She gave the testimony and to say the least it greatly effected me and Jim E. is a man with the gift of PASSION for Christ.

I have seen Through The Gates of Splendor--the first time I heard this story--and I must say, I was deeply moved...especially by the hearts of those wives that took up the place of their fallen husbands...willing to die too if it were to be required of them...to save any...they weren't assured of even reaching one.
As a child I remember going to the Museum of Natural History in San Diego...they had a shrunken head that had been donated to the museum on display for many years..the agreement for the loan to the museum was that the story be told...it was the head of a missionary who gave their life for the teaching of the gospel. I remember being horrified at first and then astonished...and mesmerized by the story...who would give their life like that?
Compelling, my Brother1 A great blog! I hope it leads many to watch these movies and read these stories....it is beyond moving! |

| I've heard of this story before, but didn't know a movie was made about it. It's hard to believe people would venture that far from the comforts of home. Even more, it's hard to believe the wives' passion to forgive and continue the mission! |

| ED: This such a worth while movie to watch. Let me know what your thoughts are once you do. As they often say, the book is better than the movie and it is the case here. But, even with that said, the movie is good! It will move you. |
