103:1 <A Psalm of David.> Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 103:2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 103:3Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; This is a Psalm of David. David was the shepherd-king of Israel. Jesus, David's Greater Son, is our Shepherd-King. David in his youth slew a lion and a bear to save a lamb of his father's flock. Jesus, our Shepherd-King has slain the twin predators of sin and sickness for us.
And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.I Samuel 17:34-37
Notice in the story we read, "Thy servant kept his father's sheep." Jesus our Shepherd-King is our keeper we are His Father's flock. The enemy of our soul comes not but to kill, steal, and destroy. The enemy never comes by for a social call. Thank God we are kept safe by our mighty Shepherd-King.
Let's look at the next phrase. "There came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: And I went out after him." David was the aggressor here. He knew what is was to fight the good fight of faith. He says, "I went out after him." It will do us no good to sit and wait for the enemy to attack. Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it." Matthew 11:12
"The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine." Here is an interesting paradox. David said "I slew the lion and the bear." and then he turns right around and says, "The Lord delivered me out of the hand of the lion and the bear." That is just the way it is with our salvation. It is by God's grace alone that we have salvation, healing, deliverance, or any other of a thousand blessings he daily loads us with. And yet whenever we experience the supernatural hand of God upon our lives Jesus utters these words, "Go in peace, your faith has made you whole."
There are two side to every equation. There is our side, that which is is our duty. Then there is God's side. In the case of Jairus' Jesus told the grieving father what he must do. "Believe only and she shall be well." The same is true for us today. It our our duty to believe, it is God's job to accomplish the impossible.
Our opening passage in Psalms repeats this blessed three-letter word "All". First, David writes, "All that is within me bless His holy name." It is as we praise Him that deliverance comes. It was as Judah praise that their enemies were defeated. It was as Paul and Silas sang at midnight that the prison walls crumbled at their feet. If we are to see the defeat of the lion of sin and the bear of sickness we must lift up our eyes to the hills knowing that our help comes from the Lord. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. Isaiah 45:22
Next we see the word "all" in verse two. Forget not all His benefits. The written word of God is the revealed will of God. If we do not know what he has promised us in his word that we cannot by faith lay claim upon His promise. The two edged sword of the Lord's Word will do us no good unless we can lay hold on it when the lion and the bear attack. We must put his word in our eyes and ears, we must keep it in our mouth and in our heart otherwise it is like medicine that we leave in the cabinet. If we do not take the prescription in it's appropriate dosage it will not take effect.
He forgives all my sin and heals all my diseases. He slew both the lion ad the bear with one stroke. It was at the cross that Jesus carried our sin and our sickness. Young's Literal Bible translates Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely our sicknesses he hath borne, And our pains -- he hath carried them, And we -- we have esteemed him plagued, Smitten of God, and afflicted. And he is pierced for our transgressions, Bruised for our iniquities, The chastisement of our peace is on him, And by his bruise there is healing to us.
And so our part in redemption is to believe; God's part of the equation was done when Jesus cried out on the cross, "It is finished!" When He bowed His head and gave up the ghost he carried our sin and sickness into Hell where he left them. When he rose again he brought no spot of sin up with him, not one symptom of sickness. He had cast it all into the depths of the sea, the lake of fire.
He forgave all my sin. What would happen if He would have left even the slightest speck of sin upon our souls? We would be hopelessly and eternally lost for not one sin cane ever pass through the gates of heaven. The stroke that slew the lion of sin did not merely cripple the bear of sickness. The good news for the child of God that our Shepherd-King slew the lion and the bear. He who forgiveth all my iniquities by the same blood healeth all my diseases.
