interesting and good takes on this topic........here's my take.... fear of the Lord should lead to something, based on the individual's fear/reverence. it's interesting when you look in the bible at "fear the Lord" - it is many times followed by either service, obedience or praise. joshua 24:14, "now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness." 1 samuel 12:24, "but be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you." ecc 12:13, "now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole {duty} of man." other times, "fear the Lord" is followed by going against sin and evil. proverbs 3:7, "do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil." proverbs 8:13, "to fear the Lord is to hate evil;" so, for Christians, it seems that if we fear God, it would lead to obedience, service and resisting and hating evil/sin. our fear of God is demonstrated by our obedience, how much, how well, and the attitude in which we serve others, and the way we feel about evilness/sin (fornication, hate, unforgiveness, lack of control with out tongue, lying, cheating, etc.) - the very things that the world accepts. so as i reflect, my question is not whether non-believers fear the Lord, because that is obvious that they don't - but do believers really fear the Lord? and i'm not saying that believers don't - i'm just asking the question. and if believers do fear the Lord, is it evident in their obedience, their service and their attitude towards evil and sin. so i ask myself this question, and i ask you to ask yourselves the same question. |
