my feverishly written notes (some barely legible)...
7-13-08 Speaker: Major Andy Kelly Scripture: Romans 8:9-17
Adopted Heirs
Romans 8:7-8 Those that live by the flesh cannot please God.
v.9 How do we know if the Holy Spirit is in us? What do we think about? Are we thinking selfishly? If the Spirit is in control - we are not our own. We live self-less lives, helping others. We put others before our own wants & needs.
For us to please God, we must allow the Spirit to overcome the flesh. v.11 The Spirit in us, Jesus will give us life.
Romans 6:4 newness of life - through the baptism of the Holy Spirit! The old self is dead and buried.
1 Corinthians 6:14 He will raise us up! We will be lifted up above our flesh, above our circumstances.
v.12-13 There's no reason for us to continue living under the contrl of sin. The Holy Spirit will help us overcome.
Galatians 6:8 we can sow to the Spirit - reap everlasting life.
Ephesians 4:22 put off old corrupt man, be renewed in the Spirit - put on the new man, created in the image of God. Through the power of the Holy Spirit!
Let the power of God fill us and renew us.
We no longer need to be wrapped up or consumed by our own needs.
v.14-15 "Abba" our Heavenly Father is perfect - He never fails! We are His children (v.16)
We are children of God if we have been adopted by the blood of Christ. If we have accepted the gift of salvation. If not, we cannot call Him Father.
v.17 If people preach riches on earth, where is the true suffering? Our treasures are stored up in heaven, not here on earth.
We need to live today, on this earth like we are children of God. Our lives should show the joy that is in Christ Jesus.
Death has already been defeated. The worst thing that could ever happen to us has been defeated.
We have victory through Jesus - our lives should bear evidence of that victory. Let us walk as children of the King. Let us walk in the power of the Holy Spirit.
God did not give us a spirit of fear. God did not give us a spirit of bondage to sin and flesh or weakness.
True children of God let God's Spirit lead them.
v.17 We still suffer - but our sufferings should not weigh us down. Our sufferings could never compare with the sufferings of Christ.
Let's live above our circumstances - let's live as joint heirs with Christ Jesus. |
