This is one of the most beautiful of passages. The picture of being under the protection of an Almighty God. There is no safer place. As I contemplate the passage, I have to ask what is the shelter of the Most High? A shelter is a prepared place. A place that the Most High God has prepared. So how do we dwell in the place that the Most High has prepared? In order to figure that out you must read the rest of the poem. There are 3 things that the writer mentions that incites God's protection and favor. The Lord says: "because he loves me", "for he acknowledges me", and "he will call upon me". Does living or dwelling with God have to do with loving Him, acknowledging Him, and calling upon Him? It seems that it does. When we love someone we put them ahead of ourself. Loving God requires that we put God's wishes, desires, and commands ahead of our own desires. In my own marriage the times that my wife knows that I love her the most is when I put her well-being, desires, and needs ahead of my own. When I put her first she feels the most loved, especially when she knows that it went against something that I wanted. Acknowledging the Lord requires that we give God credit rather than taking it for ourselves. It is easy to be proud of our accomplishments. When someone comes up and pats us on the back and compliments us it's easy to begin to swell up with pride and say to ourselves that was a good thing I did. But let us give credit where credit is due. We could not do anything good or bad except God give us strength, ability, and wisdom. "Acknowledge Him in all of your ways" the proverb says. They're not wisdom sayings for nothing. Finally, calling on the Lord presupposes that we have reached a point of needing the Lord's help. Realizing that we cannot be successful without the help of the Lord is the beginning of successfulness as long as we ask for His help, He delights to give it to us. It is always a good idea when we need a hand to find someone stronger than we are to help us out. It's never a shame to call on His name! Someone has said (someone who thought he was a lot smarter than he really was) that God is a crutch for the weak. Well if you need a crutch why not call on the Almighty. What a crutch to rest on! Nothing like using the best I always say. In working construction the nicest homes I ever worked in were always the builders homes because they knew every trick to make them the best. So if you're gonna live in anyone's home choose the Maker's home. His is always the best! 91:1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, |
