Good thoughts, very well put Mike.

   As a conformation verse:
4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

I almost wonder if James didn't have your verse in mind when he wrote this.
Your 4 steps can fit right in this verse.

Thank you for the time and thought you put into your blog Mike!    We're blessed!

I must want to and choose to. Far be it for the God who “so loved the world” to make it exceedingly difficult for anyone to draw near him!

He has NEVER made it difficult, WE made it difficult because of stubborness, pride, unbelief.  HE LAID DOWN HIS LIFE FOR YOU AND ME.....

I love your steps and they are so true, humility, prayer, seeking his face, turning from the flesh.  They are not easy and we will continue to fight the last one until our dying days, however we can win the FIGHT...

May I always humble myself before the Lord, being fervent in prayer, and my my efforts always be to get to know God more and more. I too, Mike join in the ranks of I want to and I choose to. There are times we all seem to fail however, when I do the Lord deals with me to align myself once again at the foot of the Cross. Why?, because at the foot of the Cross is where it all begins.

I hear a lot about praying for our land in this time of uncertainty, but maybe more Christians (read I) need to do steps 1, 3 and 4.

for Pastor Mike!  James 4 says:  "Draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to you."  It is simple Mike as simple as simple can be.  But it is so hard to do because the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.  We must remain  humble before God and keeping seeking Him in dependence and submission and when we do that I think the repentence and holiness will take care of itself.  We become like who we associate with for sure!  Surfs up!

What is more humbling than admitting you was wrong (especially when you was convinced you were right)?

Prayer is conversation. Do I listen?

People, problems, priorities surround me. Is GOD lost in the crowd?

Turning from your wicked ways is more than changing lanes. It is when you turn (u-turn) from living your way (even as a christian) and follow GOD's way. Am I willing to leave the easy christianity I know so well to follow GOD wherever that may lead?

GOD always hears the cries of an honest heart.

GOD forgives those who turn from the wickedness of  their way (sin).

GOD will heal you where you are.

.....peace.....

AMEN< Mike! And realize...when we are totally searching, and giving Him are whole self, be prepared for the attack! It comes in the most unusual ways...like when someone is backing into you in a parking lot, and you roll down the window and say "It's okay, you didn't hit me", and they attack you so instantly, and are so horridly mean, you shake your head in wonder. It doesn't really come from 'nowhere', and I am not looking for a demon under every bush either.

As the time gets close, evil gets worse!

Just keep tellin' it to The Lord!

love you guys,

You have such a gift for speaking truth.  And what an awesome truth it is - that not only is God present and real, but that He wants us to want Him!  And thankful that it's not 100 easy steps!! :)  Seriously, this is encouraging to me.

Thank u so much Mike. I am joining the church today and this just fit in.
I wrote the verses down that you put and Tom.
I know I had to humble myself big time
and then leanr to pray different. I took time to seek His face.
Letting go of my sinful ways took time but I did it.

"The benefits of drawing close to God really are quite impressive! "

Awesome!!! again thanks Mike ...have a wonderful day

I do like your breakdown of the verse into four objectives.  However, I think it might be interesting to consider this with Romans 3:10-12  "None is righteous, no, not one;no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one."  This pretty clearly negates the capacity of any human to accomplish the third and fourth steps and likely the first as well.  Not to despair, this news is good, and makes this even easier and more enjoyable!  In light of Romans, we stop trying (unsuccessfully) to accomplish those goals.  Rather, we simply enjoy letting God work each of these in us and praise Him for it.  Attempting to reach these goals by our own efforts would actually be a lost opportunity to glorify God and witness to His love and grace.

hehe Tammy, that is awesome. Glad the Holy Spirit is workin' around here!

Angela, thanks for your comment! It is interesting to consider Paul's quote of Psalm 14 in Romans in light of God's words to his people through Solomon. Although it is true that no one is righteous or seeks God on their own, God has extended righteousness to the world through Jesus (Rom 3:21-26). We have the ability and the responsibility to choose to cooperate with the Spirit of God, in seeking God and obeying him. You are right though, we do no good thing on our own. Praise God for his indwelling Spirit!!

"3. Seek God’s face: The next “step” involves far more than just a perfunctory daily bible reading. Seeking the face of God represents a sincere desire to know God and learn what triggers his emotions. Think about it—what do we use to express emotion nonverbally more than our face? To care this deeply about God’s feelings, I must already be in conversation with him, having already humbled myself and exalted God in my life."

Hi Mike,
Hope your trip has been good for work and family.  We just got back from ours...it was transformational for me.  Many profound observations...

On your blog, just a thought though...  I wonder how much of seeking God's face is checking out His "feelings" rather than who He is.  I find myself being very careful about the use of the word feelings in terms of Christianity as a whole, but esp. in the context with which you have defined.  Though He IS relational in the most profound way possible, I believe that the Bible teaches us to continually be "seeking His face" in scripture to better determine His character and attributes concerning His righteousness (in light of our depravity apart from Him, as you mentioned) rather than our need to know or seek His feelingsIn your defense, however I will add that I also understand that, under the whole counsel of God, that it is also necessary to know what greives the heart of God as well as what pleases Him...  but I am still not sure if seeking His emotions is the best way to describe what we seek.
Thank you for another excellent, well thought out blog, Mike.

There may be four easy "categories" of steps back to God; but to think that is all that is required is a gross deception!  There  is much, much more required of us to remain in His Presence.  Please study 2 Peter 1:5-11; and then study with us each week.

6:28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

I thought this was an interesting passage, considering your emphasis on being a "doer" in order to meet God's requirements, Brother Patrick. BTW, I would certainly not disagree w/you that what was presented in the blog could be considered categories, rather than specifics. It seems to me what Peter presents in the passage you referred to could be seen as developing more fully what Solomon referenced as "turning from our wicked ways." Obviously the opposite of doing evil would be doing good, or those things that God requires. Thanks again for your input, it is appreciated!

Tonya, thank you for your excellent comment! I read it several days ago, but only now have a chance to respond. I appreciate deeply your concerns about exalting feelings. Nowadays everything seems to revolve around feelings! But I think where we get into trouble with feelings is when we exalt our own, rather than those of others, and especially God's. A basic step in getting to know anyone is finding out what they like and don't like, or what pleases/displeases them. To "seek God's face", to me, seems to be to accomplish this very thing. Of course, getting to know God fully involves learning his other attributes as well, in addition to his heart.

Regarding God's heart, I find it interesting that John (the disciple whom Jesus loved) wrote that "God is love". Yes, the love to which John was referring was indeed more than just feelings, but even apape involves feelings, or the heart. Does it say anywhere else in scripture that "God is righteousness" or "God is justice", or even "God is faithfulness"? I honestly don't know, and am curious if you do. Thank you again for your input Tonya, iron sharpeneth iron!

Ok.  Thanks for your response...and further inquiry!
When you look at a face, you may see feelings, but aren't they rather changing or a manifestation of a changing mood?  Do we not know that God is the same and never changes?  Hasn't He revealed Himself to us in this way?
James 1:17-18
7 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
NKJV

In these terms, I think what the text is telling us is to find out "WHO IS THIS GOD?"  And further, "WHAT IS HIS WILL?"
1 Chron 16:11
11 Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face evermore!
NKJV
1 Chronicles 16:7-36
Let the heart of those rejoice that seek the Lord, much more of those that have found him. Seek him, and his strength, and his face: that is, seek him by the ark of his strength, in which he manifests himself. 4. Let the everlasting covenant be the great matter of our joy and praise (v. 15): Be mindful of his covenant. In the parallel place it is, He will be ever mindful of it, Ps 105:8. Seeing God never will forget it, we never must. The covenant is said to be commanded, because God has obliged us to obey the conditions of it, and because he has both authority to make the promise and ability to make it good. This covenant was ancient, yet never to be forgotten.

Ps 105:4
4 Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face evermore!
NKJV
Psalms 105:4

Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore.

[Seek the Lord] Worship the one only Supreme Being, as the only and all-sufficient good for the soul of man.

[And his strength] Man is weak; and needs connexion with the strong God that he may be enabled to avoid evil and do good.

[Seek his face] Reconciliation to him. Live not without a sense of his favour.

[Evermore.] Let this be thy chief business. In and above all thy seeking, seek this.

Ex 3:14

14 And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM."
NKJV
Exodus 3:11-15

1. A name that denotes what he is in himself (v. 14): I am that I am. This explains his name Jehovah, and signifies, (1.) That he is self-existent; he has his being of himself, and has no dependence upon any other: the greatest and best man in the world must say, By the grace of God I am what I am; but God says absolutely—and it is more than any creature, man or angel, can say—I am that I am. Being self-existent, he cannot but be self-sufficient, and therefore all-sufficient, and the inexhaustible fountain of being and bliss. (2.) That he is eternal and unchangeable, and always the same, yesterday, to-day, and for ever; he will be what he will be and what he is; see Rev 1:8. (3.) That we cannot by searching find him out. This is such a name as checks all bold and curious enquiries concerning God, and in effect says, Ask not after my name, seeing it is secret, Judg 13:18; Prov 30:4. Do we ask what is God? Let it suffice us to know that he is what he is, what he ever was, and ever will be. How little a portion is heard of him! Job 26:14. (4.) That he is faithful and true to all his promises, unchangeable in his word as well as in his nature, and not a man that he should lie. Let Israel know this, I AM hath sent me unto you.
(from Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible, PC Study Bible Formatted Electronic Database Copyright © 2006 by Biblesoft, Inc. All Rights reserved.)

God created us to have feelings and emotions, but I can't see the Biblical basis for KNOWING GOD or being restored in your relationship to Him by seeking His feelings or emotions.  I appreciate your honest and kind manner with which you inquired:  I am a fellow student and servant of God and am always seeking to be sharpened by the Word and others who abide in it.

Although this answer is insufficient in itself, it is a good representation of the basic ideas with which I explained in the first blog answer.

God bless you always, Brother.

"God is love" ~ We know this as three: Agape, Eros, Philos ~ I guess to determine the answer to this Q we should study these three kinds:  That would take some time to review, so I am going to leave that to you.
To speak to the Q does God call Himself, or if "God is" I think these scriptures are good examples of Him actually describing "WHO HE IS," ~ yes, He actually is these.  Do I understand all of this, NO, DO I BELIEVE IT??? YES!!!

It is written in Romans 8:5-8 (NKJV):

"For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.  For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God."

Tonya, may I ask if you perceive God as cold and unfeeling or as having a range of emotions? Again, just curious to know, sister. :-)

You quoted Ps 105, Seek his face ("Live not without a sense of his favour" from Adam Clarke's Commentary). From my perspective, seeking God's favor = seeking to please him (which Paul wrote about, see 1 Thess 4:1) = attempting to bring joy to our (Abba) Father (as opposed to anger or grief).

Most of the biblical writers have represented God as intensely relational. So it seems to me to be faithful to the bible to convey a sincere seeking to please God as being the equivalent to seeking to trigger positive emotions in God our Father, rather than negative ones (i.e. anger, grief). I saw "seek God's face" (step #3) as being very anthropomorphic, that is, using human terms to represent a divine attribute of God, i.e. seeking the expression of God's pleasure.

To really know God, as in knowing anyone at all, includes knowing what pleases/displeases them, in addition to knowing the attributes that make them who they are. Would I limit knowing God to knowing what triggers his "emotions" (pos./neg.)? No, and sorry if my blog seemed to indicate this. I would suggest that it is possible to know who someone is (their traits) as well as what pleases/displeases them w/o experiencing any intimacy at all w/them. So perhaps being restored to intimacy w/God begins, but does not end, with the "steps" God revealed to Solomon.

John 11:35-36

35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, "See how He loved him!"
NKJV

John 11:35-37

11:35-37. Jesus' weeping differed from that of the people. His quiet shedding of tears (
edakrysen
) differed from their loud wailing (
klaiontas
, v. 33). His weeping was over the tragic consequences of sin. The crowd interpreted His tears as an expression of love, or frustration at not being there to heal Lazarus.
(from Bible Knowledge Commentary/Old Testament Copyright © 1983, 2000 Cook Communications Ministries; Bible Knowledge Commentary/New Testament Copyright © 1983, 2000 Cook Communications Ministries. All rights reserved.)

Could this also have been the disciples and followers of Jesus?  Of course!!!

Recently the simplicity of this scripture has spoken volumes to me.  I have been grieving the death of  Greg Laurie's son, Christopher.  I have understood grief over the reality of death because of our fallen world.  And, I grieve the loss for my friend, Greg & his family.
This verse came to mind when you asked me if I thought God was/is "cold/unfeeling/range of emotions?"  Of course I believe God has emotions, after all, He made us in His likeness and has given us as such.
However, in the context with which we are speaking, I do not think that seeking to know an emotional response from God is what we have been taught Biblically.  As you can see, the people misinterpreted Jesus's response to Lazarus' death...and I believe we too are subject to such misunderstanding.  I have yet to hear any teacher of the Bible instruct us from God's Word to seek God's emotions or feelings as a way of understanding, knowledge, or wisdom.
As I have stated before, God is Highly relational!  In this most intimate relationship, we care about pleasing or grieving His heart, but to do that I think we need to know, as stated before, "WHO HE IS AND WHAT HE COMMANDS," and do that!

John 14:15-18

15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments.  16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever —   17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.  18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
NKJV
Again, this is still not all encompassing, but a good frame of reference.
I too believe in considering "the whole counsel of God" in determining all matters in as much as we are prepared to give an answer.
I think too, it is very easy to make a simple issue complex by our tendency to over intellectualize things... ;)
Thank you for the Q.  Good discussion:  Seasoned with dignity & respectfully given.
~T.

Ah Tonya, a lightning bolt just hit me! And this is what did it: "we care about pleasing or grieving His heart, but to do that I think we need to know, as stated before, "WHO HE IS AND WHAT HE COMMANDS," and do that!" I think this statement of yours clears up most of my misunderstanding of what you were trying to get across T! This is precisely what I meant by "Seeking the face of God represents a sincere desire to know God and learn what triggers his emotions." Ok, so I put that in the context of learning about God's emotions. But the basis of this is to know what pleases God. Surely that is at least part, and possibly a significant part, of what Solomon meant as he wrote by the inspiration of the Spirit of God.

Have I over-intellectualized? Possibly yes! But I think at last, at least, I understand you. :-)  Yes, thanks loads T, this has been an enjoyable dialogue. I appreciate your humble heart. ~mike

I too have enjoyed our healthy discussion ~ lots of benefits to be had!  Many frustrations too!  I am not the best writer, but I have a passion for expression and entering into discussion on a Spiritual level.  Too often these subjects are difficult to fully examine given time constraints...but I will always do my best to portray a Biblical worldview of Truth to all who I am in conversation with to my best understanding.  I also seek to be taught...as painful as changing my mind is at times.  Many Christians fall into the trap of spiritual pride in this area:  I have witnessed that we understand one way or rely on our positions of authority to determine what we will hear and from who, so we throw up a wall and reject greater understanding for the current status quo.  I hope to always be changing, which means throwing out the bad while accepting something better.  I may not always agree with others based on convictions I may or may not be able to explain well, but I am glad for the Biblical framework which currently exists within the constructs of my mind and am glad to fellowship in this capacity.  I am only a fellow bond-servant of Christ that I will take my last breath a student of the Word.
~May God prosper you in His Spirit.

...and a comment - not to you Tonya, but to those who are offended whenever someone asserts that it is easy to come to God (or return to him)... why? Why do you have such a hard time accepting that God welcomes sinners, welcomes anyone with a sincere desire to approach him?

I know, I know... It's the "steps". Everyone has a hard time with the idea of steps to anything. 12 steps to freedom from addiction! 5 easy steps to success! 10 steps to a better you!! Ugh!

The idea here with the steps (other than the fact that Solomon/God passed along 4) is, are these four points progressive, like steps? I see them that way, obviously......

This blog is kind of old, I know, but this verse has really stuck in my mind. (It better have, I memorized it!) It's a good one to meditate on!

Now that you are encouraged to do the four steps to "come back to God" (and that is a good start).  Now, learn to stay with Jesus - that is the real challenge.  And we can do it when we learn to "walk in the Spirit" - and not fulfil the works of the flesh.

Yes, it sometimes is not so easy - until our "minds" are renewed.  We can do it - if for no other reason than Jesus says we can, and that we must  - in Him.  And you know what; He is not a liar.

Please study with us.

Blessings to all.
