I also find it very elightening that Paul encourages Timothy not to be "ashamed of the Gospel but to join in the suffering by the power of God" (1:8). As if Paul is helping Tim to see that the world around him is going to make him feel ashamed of the Gospel through various people, scenarios, circumstances, etc. It's as if he is encouraging Tim to stay grounded in the scriptures, like an anchor as you have put it, to keep him focused on the Gospel and speaking the Truth of it to the world around him. To certain extent I wonder if Paul is almost thinking or wondering if, given enough ecouragement, Tim may one become as Paul was Preaching Christ's Gospel to various noations and spurring them on towards the goal. In Ch.4 Paul is very clear regarding the natural tendancy of humans to seek to find their own way towards whatever their itching ears want to hear. Myths he calls them. It was Tim's task and ours as well, I believe, to know the Truth and be able to offer the Truth when called upon. |
