Great morning of worship, I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way!
Speaker: Major Andy Kelly Scripture: Matthew 14:22-33
Special Music by the Praise Band: "Your Name"
Message: Why Did You Doubt?
Immediately after the wonderful miracle of the feeding of the 5000 (which was actually more than 10,000), Jesus told the disciples to get in a boat and go to the other side. Then he went up to pray alone. He was both human and divine - he prayed and spent time with God the Father. He received reviving power. If He needed that, how much more do we need it?
There was a reference at this point to Luke 29:8 which I think was a trick or I wrote it down wrong... :-)
He has set the example for us to follow - spend time in fellowship with God. Take yourself away from any distractions. He is the best example we have to follow. The only perfect example.
v.25 walking on the sea in the midst of the storm v.26 they thought He was a ghost v.27 Jesus speaks to them v.28 Peter asks Jesus to command him to go to Him v.29 Jesus said "Come." and Peter stepped out of the boat in FAITH.
We have storms in our lives - physical, emotional, spiritual storms. When we don't have faith and give into a spirit of fear we begin to sink just as Peter did.
We need to have faith, trust in His Word - He loves us - He will never leave us - Nothing can separate us from His love - we can do all things through the power of Jesus Christ. Faith the size of a mustard seed is all we need to move mountains. We need to have the faith to step out into the storm and know that God is with us.
I thought of the song that goes sometimes he calms the storm and other times he calms His child. That has certainly been the case with me this summer! I am calm and the storm rages around me...
6:28 And why are you troubled about clothing? See the flowers of the field, how they come up; they do no work, they make no thread: 6:29 But I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 6:30 But if God gives such clothing to the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is put into the oven, will he not much more give you clothing, O you of little faith? 6:31 Then do not be full of care, saying, What are we to have for food or drink? or, With what may we be clothed? 6:32 Because the Gentiles go in search of all these things: for your Father in heaven has knowledge that you have need of all these things: 6:33 But let your first care be for his kingdom and his righteousness; and all these other things will be given to you in addition. 6:34 Then have no care for tomorrow: tomorrow will take care of itself. Take the trouble of the day as it comes.
God does not want us to doubt.
We all have trials we're facing - the devil will try his hardest to trip us up. That's when we need to trust in Jesus more! The name of Jesus is the only name we can put our trust in and not doubt.
Major sang I'm In His Hands: (732 in songbook... cut & pasted from salvationist.org... nice!)
1. I shall not fear though darkened clouds may gather round me; The God I serve is one who cares and understands. Although the storms I face would threaten to confound me, Of this I am assured: I'm in his hands.
Chorus I'm in his hands, I'm in his hands; Whate'er the future holds I'm in his hands, The days I cannot see Have all been planned for me; His way is best, you see; I'm in his hands.
2. What though I cannot know the way that lies before me? I still can trust and freely follow his commands; My faith is firm since it is he that watches o'er me; Of this I'm confident: I'm in his hands.
3. In days gone by my Lord has always proved sufficient, When I have yielded to the law of love's demands; Why should I doubt that he would evermore be present To make his will my own? I'm in his hands! Stanley E. Ditmer
Major singing is a blessing! He has a beautiful voice and great God-given talent!
