Lord God you even care for the sparrow, give them peace and Lord let the Doc's know what to do. Reveal all things.

In The Name of Jesus, Amen and Amen

I will pray for you and your dog.  I just lost my beloved cat to kidney failure last week, and I am devastated.  Our animals are family, aren't they?  I hope that Mel is ok.

Thank you all for your prayers and, if you will, please keep Mel on your prayer list for the next two weeks; through Saturday, August 30th. Mel is on 100% bed rest until then.

This is what has happened. Mel, being the excitable little puppy she is, has the beginnings of a herniated disc in her spine. The area is pressing on her spinal chord and causing a great deal of pain. If the disc totally herniates, paralysis will most likely occur and if that alone does not stop her vital organs (heart and lungs) from functioning, the pain would be so bad that she would need to be put to sleep.

Unfortuantely, she is one very ill pug right now. She is at home and will be taking pain pills for the next two weeks. She will need to be crated for this time of healing. Right now, I have her crate beside me on my hospital bed. Mel will need to be walked to go to the bathroom and must not get excited or more damage is likely. Of course, for Mel not to get excited over doorbells, cars, other dogs barking, etc.; that will be a miracle in itself.

Theresa and I are very upset and concerned for Mel as if we were about to lose our baby. We have grown so attached to her so fast. I ask for a healing touch to her spine and discs as well as a calming touch for the next 2 weeks to keep her from causing further damage to the disc.

Thanks again for your continued prayers. Mel sends her love to you all.

Deb, so sorry to hear about the loss of your confidante and friend. If yours is like our pets, they have heard ALL of your stories; triumphs and failures. They are always by our side and unlike human family and friends, they rarely yell back at you. All they know is LOVE. Perhaps that is one reason God gave us pets; so that we could see how agape (one-way) love really works. My prayers to you for comfort during this period of grief. God bless you. Dave

Still praying for you...if I could suggest something too...to keep Mel calm and not spooked by noises, I would recommend getting one of those 'sound machines' that make either white noise or ocean sounds or something - my dog who would always freak out during the 4th of July was always helped by that.

Will the disc heal itself?

GrowingInFaith, great suggestion. Thanks! Mel is reacting to noises with sudden jerks. Thanks again for the idea.

DeborahJ, it is my understanding that the disc, since it did not "blow out," will heal if Mel follows doctor's orders. That is the key. I've had a "slipped disc" before that healed by itself. Perhaps these are similar? Answered your question with a question. LOL - - Sorry

Is there a veterinarian in the house?  <wink>

UPDATE for Sunday, August 17th at 6:30 PM EDT

Thank you again for your continued prayers. Mel still appears to have some paralysis in her hind legs, typical of a spinal chord injury (SCI). Since the SCI appears to be incomplete, a full recovery is anticipated. For now, it is just so sad to see our Mel not able to stand and run around like Mel. We are trusting in the Lord for all of this and ask for all of your continued prayers. Dave

UPDATE for Thursday, August 28th at 6:00 PM EDT

Please continue to lift Mel up in prayer. She appears to be "giving up" and is staying in her bed. She is shaking which I understand to mean that she is in severe pain. I don't know if Mel will be with us much longer. If she is not better by Saturday, she will go back to the veterinarian to determine what's next. I cannot imagine losing Mel at just 1 year of age. We are all extremely concerned. Please, please, please pray for Mel's healing. Dave
