| To Know His name... |
|
| |
3:15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Jehovah, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. In the old testament times a name was not only an identity but it had special meaning. Throughout the Old Testament God reveals Himself through various forms of His name. When we know His names we better understand who God indeed is. For example did you know that Jehovah is translated as "The Existing One" or "Lord." Jehovah is derived from the Hebrew word Havah meaning "to be" or "to exist." It also suggest "to become" or specifically "to become known"--this denotes a God who reveals Himself unceasingly. blueletterbible.org
I don't know about you but I LOVE that. Maybe this is one of the reasons why I love the Old Testament so much because I SEE that all through it. I SEE the Lord lovinging revealing Himself over and over again to a people who don't understand His ways or His thoughts. I see Him constantly trying to renew their minds...I see Him telling them of His plan of redemption, and giving them hope for a new day. He show so many facets of Himself so His people never loose hope, they never need to stray, & they never have to give up....
Our patriarchs passed on down to us aspects of our Father may you be blessed by some of them.
El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty) El Elyon (The Most high God) Adonai (Lord, Master) Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah) Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner) Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd) Jehovah Rapha (The Lord that Heals) Jehovah Shammah (The Lord Is There) Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness) Jehovah Mekoddishkem (The Lord Who Sanctifies You) El Olam (The Everlasting God) Elohim (God) Qanna (Jealous) Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide) Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace) Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts)
17:28 for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain even of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
If you want more information on these names go to www.blueletterbible.organd put in a search for "The names of God in the Old Testament" You will get a print out of them with a paragraph explanation. I keep this in my Bible to carry with me wherever I go. It is a great reference. |

Michael, your comment was missing something..... a link to this!
Loriinfj, this is a great one. God's names mean much! Do these names reflect his people's perspective of who he is, or how he revealed himself to them? (my guess is both!) |

| Thanks Michael...of all these Jehovah Nissi got me most curious, it is used when the Israelites defeated the Amalekites. You see it in Exodus 17:15. I had an awesome step-father, he was my Daddy...and he truly covered me spiritually. I literally FELT his prayers cover me like a blanket at times, literally come up and cover and warm me. I use to call him and ask what he prayed for me about, either the night before or that morning, and it would always amaze him that I would know when he really battled for me spiritually...Well, when he died...I MOURNED THAT as much as his talks and presence. I can't explain this to anyone but if you have ever experienced that kind of spiritual covering you know what I'm talking about, and if you haven't you should pray that you do...I had bough him a cashmere blanket to warm himself before he died, he was always cold and he would drape this around his shoulders every day and pray..now this was before I really knew about prayer shawls and the tradition behind them. I got that blanket back...When I really miss him...I pull that out and wrap myself in it...to me it is a banner..it is a focal point...Now, I know technically that those are more like flags but I think of the song "his banner over me is love" and that really reminds me of Jehovah Nissi...How the Lord personally covers us in the hardest of times, in our waring times with our enemy...I think it is important for each of us to make this personal to us, and I hope everyone does that....so they can see how the Father loves them so personally... |

| Prophet...praying the names does have benefits...I think it is so much better than Dear Lord...but hey, that is always OK too...prayer is prayer...but as my Daddy always said...know to whom you are speaking! |
