101:3 I will not put any evil thing before my eyes; I am against all turning to one side; I will not have it near me. Psa 101:3 I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. ESV I was having a conversation with one of my students about video games and certain kinds of music. I explained to him that the human brain is a fearfully and wonderfully made machine that computes faster than any computer known to man. Yet, God did not give us a Recycling Bin in which to place un-needed files. Everything we have ever seen or heard just gets filed away until recalled at a later time. Interestingly enough, I asked him if he knew anyone with Alzheimer's. I remember when my Great-Grandmother began to exhibit signs and could remember events that occured when she was 5-6 years old. Now, she was in her 90s when she passed away. And then it hit me how true God's word is and why there are little nuggets such as this included. You see, Alzheimer's shows us that positive memories can be recalled even though the present may be lost. BUT, look at how society will blame video games as contributing to violence- a negative recall of the past. Do I believe that Columbine can be attributed to playing DOOM? No. Do I feel that it could be considered a contributing factor? Absolutely! The images in that game once placed before your eyes cannot be erased. There's no Recycling Bin for the Greatest Computer ever made. And when someone who already has issues is at a weak moment- Our adversary the devil, who is walking about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour, has just found supper! Ever thought about how those sinful flashbacks from your past pop into your head at just the right time, like when you are doing something spiritual? The devil was really good at reminding me of how sinful I have been in the past, but I refused to let him have the victory. You see, God has promised to "remember my sins no more." Keep the junk out! If your kids can't watch it, you shouldn't either. If the kids can't hear it, you shouldn't either. Do you know how hard it is for the Devil to attack if you are doing this: 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord [is]. 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. I can tell you, develop these habits and watch how bright your days become. God bless you. |
