| Pharissee or Prosititute? |
|
| |
Luke 7:36-50 New Living Translation 36 One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat. [a] 37 When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. 38 Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them. 39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!” 40 Then Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.” “Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied. 41 Then Jesus told him this story: “A man loaned money to two people—500 pieces of silver[b] to one and 50 pieces to the other. 42 But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?” 43 Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.” “That’s right,” Jesus said. 44 Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume. 47 “I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.” 48 Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?” 50 And Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Self-righteousness blinds us from seeing ourselves as Jesus sees us.
There are 3 people mentioned in this scene from the ministry of Jesus Christ.
There was a "prostitute." There was a "Pharisee" There was Jesus
THE PROSTITUTE saw herself as a sinner in need of Jesus. She recognized Jesus for who he was and that she was a sinner: I have found in my experience with people that there are two kinds of people. There are the kind of people that don't have to be told that they are sinners. They are sinners and they know it. Then there are those who are sinners but don't know it. Even if they know they are "sinners" they also justify their actions and say, "I am better than most people. I am generally a good person." When she entered into the presence of Jesus Christ she wept. She was moved to tears and convicted of her sin. She in an act of embarrassment and concern wiped her tears that fell onto the feet of Jesus with her hair. She humbled herself kissed and anointed his feet with perfume as an act of love and honor. This was a extremely sinful woman. On the outside she was considered "unclean" but she was not too proud to humble herself before Jesus. Because she showed Jesus much love she received Christ's righteousness. He forgave her sins!
THE PHARISEE did not see himself. He saw the sinfulness of the woman. He was blinded to his own sinfulness, rather he was disgusted at the intrusion of this prostitute into his home! As far as he was concerned he was a good and righteous man. He saw no savior that could save him from his sin in his very presence. Now granted, this man was not as bad a sinner as this woman, however, he still had his own short-comings. Jesus asked him about two men that owed debt. One that was a small amount of debt and one was a larger amount but, they both were unable to pay the debt. I have learned that if we are broke then $50 might as well be $500! The pharisee although he had a relatively small sin debt he was in the same boat as the woman because they both were unable to pay. The pharisee was blinded by seeing himself as God saw Him because all he could see was his own goodness. Many good people fail to receive the grace of God that is available to them because they don't think they need it! They are blinded to their need for a savior because all they see is their own goodness.
Jesus saw a woman who was sorrowful, sincere, and sacrificial. Jesus saw a man that was smug, self-righteous, and cynical. Suppose you had an opportunity to see yourself as God sees you. What would you see? Would you see a person who is need of God's forgiveness and righteousness or would you see a person that is proud and feeling pretty good about yourself?
Remember God is concerned with the heart not the outward appearances we project. God is concerned with the motives and intentions, not so much the methods of how we do things. God is concerned with our humility not our pride. |

| good post......people really need to look at one-self, instead judging everyone else......people tend to forget that God's ways are higher than our ways......so when a person does something that isn't " the norm of a man," doesn't mean that person isn't being Godly............ |

| Nice blog Brother Todd...and one thing I always tell folks....and it don't matter who you are, or what category you fit in...you may be the Pharissee or the Prostitute....All of our righteousness is as filty rags....and the wages of sin is still death.....It's only He that endures to the end of the race is the one that shall be saved.....God is looking for the humble and contrite spirit....and the one that will worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. |

What a wonderful job you have done with this very valuable blog! Very, very good!
My debt was enormous and lets face the truth, I sometimes continue to rack up some debt. But Jesus has paid it all and He is not through with me yet!

Juan: Thanks, it doesn't do much good to write and preach if we can't be clear. Then it is all in vain. Thank you, for the encouragement.
Pasha: Thank you, and yes of course you are not alone in having a debt but yest Jesus paid for it all, and all your future mistakes as well on the cross. He who knew no sin became sin for us that we might have the righteousness of God in Him. AMEN! He is not through with you or any of us we are a work in progress and a beautiful work at that! |
