However, those who do not accept Christ will be judged according to their works. Our plea is Jesus alone: Theirs is THEIR OWN righteousness which is as "filthy rags." God is just.
Rev 20:12-13 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. NKJV
Revelation 20:7-15 What books are involved in this final judgment? The Bible will be there, according to John 12:48. The very Word that sinners hear and reject today will judge them on the last day. There is the Book of Life, containing the names of the saints. If a person's name is not found in the Book of Life, he or she is cast into hell (v. 15). Also present is the book containing the deeds people have done. God is a Righteous Judge; He keeps a record of their deeds and will punish each one justly. Certainly those who knew the truth and deliberately disobeyed it will be punished with greater severity than those who did not know the truth. Hell will have degrees of punishment in the same way that heaven has degrees of reward (Matt 11:20-24). Good works will not save sinners, but God will judge their works fairly and give them a just punishment in hell. There will be no opportunity for sinners to argue their case. When the books are opened and the facts revealed, they will stand speechless before Christ (Rom 3:19). God will not weigh the good against the bad; He will pronounce every lost sinner condemned . All those who share in the second resurrection must face the second death - eternal hell. (from Wiersbe's Expository Outlines on the New Testament. 1 Peter 1:13-21 Living Before God Our Father 13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy." 17 And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you 21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. NKJV
1 Peter 1:13-21 The blessed hope ought to make us live holy lives (1 John 3:1-3). We must "gather our thoughts" and not let them fly loose (see Ex 12:11). Another motive for separated living is the commandment of the Word (Lev 11:44; 19:2; 20:7). "Holy" does not mean sinless perfection, which is a condition impossible in this life anyway (1 John 1:8-10). It means set apart, separated unto God. If we are God's children, then we ought to be like our Father. A third motive for holy living is the judgment of God (v. 17). God chastens His children today and tests their works at the Judgment Seat of Christ (1 Cor 3:1 ff). He has no "favorites" but treats all of His children alike. Ps 103:10-14 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; 12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him. 14 For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. NKJV
