27:4 One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inqure in His temple. (Psalm 27:4 NKJV)
This is a Psalm of David. David was a man that was known as "a man who's heart was fully devoted to God." (I Kings 11:4) The passion of King David could be summed up in this simple prayer. David makes one request, "One thing I have desired of the LORD, and that will I seek." But that one thing is broken down into 3 parts. What is the one thing King David really asking for? He is asking for intimacy. David wanted a relationship with God. David earnestly desired to know God on a personal level. His three in one request is this:
1. To dwell in the house of the LORD all the days fo his life. In David's day and time the "house of the LORD" was the Tabernacle. In the Tabernacle it was widely known that was the place where the LORD dwelt. David wanted to be where God was! One place that David could always count on finding the LORD was in the House of the LORD. Jesus later taught the Samaritan woman that it didn't really matter where God was worshipped as long as He was worshipped in Spirit and in truth. We have the wonderful privilege of worshiping God anywhere, any place and any time in whatever expression we choose. What a wonderful freedom! We are not bound by a place to meet God, but He is available to us 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. David wanted to be in the Presence of the LORD. Psalm 116:11 says "You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." Wouldn't you like to be there? In Your Heavenly Father's presence where there is joy and eternal pleasures! Wow! The "One Desire" is to be with God!
2. To behold the beauty of the LORD. It was not enough for David to just be with the LORD but he wanted to gaze upon His beauty. There are several references in the Scriptures to the "beauty of His holiness." God is light, He is pure, He is without spot or blemish! When we look at each other no matter how pleasant they may be to look at there is a fault, a flaw or blemish for we are imperfect beings! But imagine to look upon the LORD! How beautiful He must be! Today we live in a society where we are always on the phone, the cell, the computer, texting and emailing us. However, that is not substitute for face to face interaction. Oh to be like Moses! He sat and spoke with the LORD as a man does "face to face!" Is it possible for us to have that kind of intimacy with the Father? I don't know, but I do desire it! I have in my mind what He looks like. I know one thing, that no one can see God and live, so if I am to see Him face to face I am going to have to be a dead man! But to just get a glimpse like Moses as He passes by, or to have a vision like Isaiah to see "Him high and lifted up" or as John "With hair as wool and Eyes like fire!" Like the song by Mercy Me "I can only imagine! In the words of the late Keith Green, "Oh, Lord your beautiful your face is all I see. For when your eyes are upon this child Your grace abounds toward me." This must have been what David felt as He lingered in the presence of the LORD.
3. To inquire in His Temple. Back in the Old Testament days only the High Priest was able to go behind the veil and inquire of the Lord on behalf of the people. Since Christ died on the cross He became our High Priest offering once and for all atonement for the people through His blood. When Christ was dying on the cross "He yelled out! "It is finished meaning "Paid in Full" (our sin debt was paid in full at that moment). Then the veil in the Temple was torn in two! Giving all of us who believe access into the Holy of Holys where we can now come boldly before the throne of God and obtain help and mercy in our time of need! David, wanted that privilege of being able to hear from God. He valued that he was not satisfied just to be with Him or to gaze upon Him, but He wanted to be able to commune with Him. What a thrill it is for the believer to be able to access the very throne room of God. Yet, sadly, many of us do not take advantage of that opportunity and we struggle and waffle because of unwillingness to inquire of the Lord. Although David asked "3" things of the LORD what David really desired and craved and sought after was intimacy with God.
Who wants to be like David? Who here will pray that prayer today? LORD I want to know you more! LORD I want to be with You, to see You, and to hear from You. What do you desire? Who do you desire?
29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find [me], when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Hi Todd, This article makes me recount what Paul said after He had been given the Holy Spirit and began to walk the walk. Phil. 3:10, "that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection (Life), and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death..." This verse makes me think of time, quality time and preparing for it, when the Spirit leads. Jesus went away by Himself to have undistracted time with God. We need to do this if we want to have intimacy. Sometimes candle light (like they had) helps. Christian meditation? R... |

Oh... Intimacy with my Father
He knows how I felt during the moments I cannot remember as child and teenager. He protected me. He mothered me, and He laughed with me when no else understood.
He was with me when I miscarried my babies, and I was by myself. He was with during the drive to the hospital, and held me as the doctors did what had to be done. He held me so tightly that I didn't fall apart.
My joy is my Father. When He calls me, I shall see Him, and gaze at His Face through the brilliance of the Heavens. I shall be soaked in His Presence and I shall be complete. |

| R: I could not agree with you more. That is one of my favorite passages and in fact it is one of those that I have memorized and made part of my thinking. If we don't take time to know Him we will miss out on much of what He has for us. |
