Half the world's population (3 billion+) lives on less than $2 per day. One billion live on less than $1 per day. To communicate this idea to the senior high youth we went on a field trip to Ogle's to see if we could buy enough food to live on for a day with just $2. Here were some of the combinations: - Rice and black beans
- Everything bagels, pancake mix, & 2 bananas
- Pancake mix & bananas
- Five pounds of potatoes
- Ramen noodles and kool aid
We found it was definitely doable, tho' not incredibly tasty. We estimated that we spend between $15-25 per day on food. Almost ten times what most people live on. We looked at these verses: 19:17 He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed. 21:13 He who closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself cry out and not be heard. 22:9 He who has a bountiful eye [generous] will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor. |
