3:3 Let not yours be the outward adorning with braiding of hair, decoration of gold, and wearing of fine clothing, 3:4 but rather the hidden character of the heart, expressed in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and calm disposition, which is precious in the sight of God. This portion of this letter, is written, more specifically, to the Christian wives of Asia Minor provinces, including those who lived in areas evangelized by St. Paul. It goes on to talk about how husbands should honor their wives in understanding (1 Peter 3:7). It follows by saying how together, husbands and wives, are to “be of one mind, sympathetic, loving toward one another, compassionate, and humble” (1 Peter 3:8). Then it gives positive ways of doing this. But, you don’t have to be married to read and benefit from the first letter of Peter! All you have to do is open your Bible! |
