The Philokalia is a 5 volume collection of writings from passionate Eastern Orthodox Christians from about the 300s to the 1800s. It was collected and put together by a Russian monk in the 1800s. It is my favorite book after the Bible. Here are a few quotes:
"If you do not watch yourself, but consort with people of evil character; you will be infected with their leprosy and destroyed." --John of Karpathos
"Never belittle the significance of your thoughts, for not one escapes God's notice." --Mark the Ascetic
"The science of sciences and the art of arts is the mastery of evil thoughts." --Hesychios the Priest
"One man received a thought and accepted it without examination. Another received a thought and tested its truth. Which of them acted with greater reverence?" --Mark the Ascetic
"Turn quickly away from pride and do not dally with it." Evagrios the Solitary
"If you do not watch yourself, but consort with people of evil character, you will be infected with their leprosy and destroyed." --John of Karpathos
"True ministry is not simply a celebration of sacred rites; it also involves participation in divine blessings and the communication of those blessings to others." --Gregory of Sinai
"Rebuke evil thoughts and do not let them penetrate the heart and settle there." --Theoliptos
"The seeming joys of the world are not to be compared with the experience of divine grace in the soul." --Makarios of Egypt
"Stop defiling your flesh with shameful deeds and polluting your soul with wicked thoughts." --Maximos the Confessor |
