*Note: this is not an approval or recommendation for MTV or any of the music that was on the show, and I am not telling you should have watched or to watch, but reality is some of you did...
So last night, Melissa and I sat down and watch the MTV Video Music Awards. I like to keep up with what is going on in the world, with music, and with my JHers. I will be real with you, I watch MTV when I was teen, and it was not my first time watching the awards...actually it was thier 25th anniversary. Here is the deal, I know I am an old dude, and you may think I just don't "get it" and you may not agree with my opinion, but I am challenging you guys always to think. Anyway here is my thoughts and perspective. The show was poor over all, maybe a C, if that. The whole thing was unorganized, random, and kind of unprofessional. People didn't have mics, they were reading the wrong cues, or waiting for cues. The host, whoever he was, was kind of a "twit" (* use a British accent). He was sort of a pervert, and was not funny. His constant talking about the Jonas Brother's purity rings and choose to wait till marriage got old quick. The music was bad. Beside the lyrics and clothes, which were bad, the actual performances were just cheesy and off. The awards themselves in my opnion were given the wrong people :-), I thought the point was to given to the most talented??
Here the thing, it is just one long bad commerical for what they want to force on you. "You will like this"..."You will buy this"... "You should watch this". Ironically the zombie dance thing at the beginning with Riana was right on- be our zombies... be brain dead, lifeless and don't think. Here a simple question -take away the MTV push and ask yourself what would my reaction be to this? If someone that looked like Little Wayne walked up to you the street what would your reaction be? If you spent a wad of cash to go to a concert, and the sound was bad and the performers were drunk what would think? If someone walked up to your friend and started making the comments that the host made, what would you say? Once again, I am not recommending any this music or MTV, but I know many of you today are probaly hearing about it or you may even watched it last night, so as your youth pastor I wanted to comment on it. Leave me your thoughts and comments. I could have said much more, but I was thinking about it and praying about it so I wanted to put it out there.
PS--Not to bust out the preach on you but let me leave you with this- 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

I really hope everyone reads your comment Dan. I couldn't agree with you more. I didn't watch this year's VMA's but I must admit I've seen my share of MTV over the years and as I begin to view this type of stuff and see it for what it really is, it tears me up inside. I want so badly for our youth group to understand the tools the devil uses today. The things that seem "so cool" fall apart if you just ask God real quick His opinion and I wish someone would have challenged me when I was younger. Just take a quick look and stop and think, is this honorable to God or is it something "cool" to watch and talk to my friends about.
If you disagree I would like to hear your side of the story. |

| he was terrible and i dont understand why he was saying that stuff about promise rings the jonas brothers r a rly good band they r pretty much a christian band and he should b saying how good it was of them to wear the rings and show what the believe in instead of every1 else just not wearing them b/c they dont want ppl to b judging them. and he was saying so many rude remarks and perverted stuff i kept changing the channels when he talked... and yea i dont understand why every1 who won an award thanked God they dont believe in him the don't mean it they only did it to try to sound all sweet and stuff. and yea there outfits where rly bad it almost inbarriesed me to be see-ing girls who r sapost to b ROLL MODELS! dress like that! and then ppl say why is r world going bad and why is all these girls getting pregnent and its b/c the ppl we look up to r showing us bad exsamples of what we should b.. like with the whole vanessa hudgends photo thing and the Hannah montana photo's too... it makes me mad when i think about it all.. well i just wanted to give u my oppinion on it so comment make telling me what u think. |

omg Dan i seriously agree with you on this! everything you are saying, they were the worst VMAs i have ever watched in my 13 years of life :] Russell Brand [Host] was seriously messed up. The Jonas Brothers did an amazing job though with their performance :] haha but ya they are good Role Models and set good examples for young guys and girls ruining their life with doing things they regret. Rihanna did really bad i thought live, she was dressed innapropriatly and she just pretty much ruined the stage. Kid Rock and Lil Wayne really rocked the stage i thought :] but Lil wayne T pain and Leona Lewis was just weird! that host made some bad comments on that. i vote the whole thing was pretty much a D and Lastly i agree how most of those awards were given to the wrong people, especially Brittany Spears! i mean she has not been the best role model in yung girls life and i dont think she ever will be a good one. with her bad reputation. She is really not that talented to win pretty much the whole entire thing! Well, ya thats my opinion on the VMAs sunday night :]

im personally not apealled to watching MTV. Really, I mean I know its supposed to be SO in and SO cool but HELLO its just another fad! anyway ((on subject now :p)) the music awards are always giving pressure to kids. For example little kids ((which i mean because 2 things we are kids, and younger kids in 2nd grade watch it)) watch the music awards and seeing 2 women, who have a major media impact, make-out on TV gives them the idea that its okay. So I wonder why someone would want to trash their brain? I mean thats really what ur doing.. i mean i don't know what ur intentions were ((the music or the celebrity)) but you knowing the previous history should be able to make the decision to NOT trash your mind. sorry it may confuse you but try reading it like twice. im not saying that anyone who watches MTV is trashy or dumb im saying the need to think : D |
