4:35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, "Let us go across to the other side." 4:36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 4:37 And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 4:38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care if we perish?" 4:39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 4:40 He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?" 4:41 And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?"
Like the disciples, many of us would become terrified and fearful, if we were caught in a fierce storm that seemed to threaten our lives. I'd like to think before they became disciples, these 12 men had either witnessed or heard of Jesus healing lepers, driving out demons, healing paralytics, etc., so they probably thought why not ask if Jesus could do something about the storm. Many of us have witnessed how God has healed and delivered, and like the disciples, when we experience a situation requiring a miracle, we ask if God can do something about it. Verse 38 tells us Jesus was sleeping during the time of the storm, and the disciples even questioned whether or not He cared if they drowned. Do you ever feel as though Jesus is sleeping during the most turbulent times of your life? What events in our lives have been forecasted to become major hurricanes, threatening to wreak havoc and cause destruction? Is it our finances, our spouses, our children, our jobs, our friendships, or even our church? Do we consult with our heavenly meteorologist to determine the path of the storm and if we should evacuate, or do we wait until the storm is near and then make impulse decisions as to what course of action we will take? If we are anchored in the Lord, we are equipped to handle the impending storm. Let's examine hurricane basics and relate them to God's truths: His Holy Spirit acts as our meteorologist, providing forecasts and predicts the potential impact of the storms; His Holy Word directs how we should prepare for the storms before they come, and it can even provide our evacuation routes, tell us which supplies we need and how to best protect our families and homes from the enemy; and finally, God has given us His only begotten Son as the ultimate refuge from the storm, when we decide to trust and follow him. Storms will come in our lives, and at times, it may feel like Jesus has fallen asleep and doesn't care if we drown. However, we cannot allow the enemy to consume us with fear. We can cry out to our Savior and by faith believe He is resting firmly in our Heavenly Father, who cares for us and will deliver us. When we are anchored in the Lord, no storm will tear us away from Him! I have included a YouTube link to a song that I hope will inspire us to remember why we should be anchored in the Lord (you may have to copy and paste this link, if it does not allow to click and open the page).

In verse 36 it says there were other boats with them. In the KJV it says "little boats". What happened to them? Did they survive the storm?
So often it is easy to be so focused on our crisis and lose sight of how our circle of influence is being felt by the "other little boats", those people who we interact with, are friends with, minister to. As long as we are terrorized by the storm we are fighting for survival just like those in the other little boats. But once we give the storm to Jesus and He calms the storm inside the storm on the outside begins to calm.
Oh, circumstances may not change but we do. Peace stills the fear in our hearts, what if becomes praise the Lord anyway, and others see and are encouraged. You may never hear a thank-you but you have given hope to others as they deal with storms in their lives.
.....peace..... |
