I heard a train in the distance - I didn't know if it was coming or going. When I got to the crossing, the lights began to flash. The bell rang. The arm came down. Then the train came through, loud and fast and powerful. I looked at the cars, trying to see what was in them. I wondered where it was going. I looked at the graffiti. I wondered when I would be able to continue on my way. Finally, the last car went by, taking the noise of the train with it. Suddenly my attention was drawn back to the crossing gate. I could hear the bell again, now that the train had passed. God let me know that this is how He often works in my life. I'm aware of His presence, but when things come crashing into my life, full of danger and excitment, they steal my attention away from Him, who is still there, keeping me safe. Only when things are quiet again, do I turn my attention back to Him, and I remember that He was there all along. |
