1 Corinthians 13 KJV
Remarks and comments in red.
1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
(Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not LOVE, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. Without LOVE we are no more than sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal - like the heathern that worshipped idols and were noisy, empty and worthless.)
2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
IMAGINE THIS!!!!! Even though one has the gift of prophecy, and understands all mysteries and ALL knowledge, and though one has ALL faith, so that they could remove mountains, but have not LOVE, they are NOTHING....
Didn't Balaam also have the gift of prophecy but have no love for God or Israel? He was brought to ruin...
And as Wesley said concerning the moving of mountains, "This means the highest degree of miracle-working faith." Yet if we have all of that huge amount of faith, and have not love, it is nothing...
Judas Iscariot was cited by David Lipscomb as being an example of faith to perform miracles, but with no love of Christ. "Judas had faith to work miracles (Matthew 10:1); but he did not possess love, betrayed the Lord, and went to his own place." F10
Not even "all faith" can bring any man salvation unless his heart is filled with love of man and of God. That love will also bring obedience to God's word!
3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Even if we give everything we have and even give our bodies to be burned, and have not LOVE, it won't amount to nothing.
No bounteous giver nor even self denial will cause one to be assured of eternal life without LOVE.
4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, Patient endurance and active good are qualities of love.
5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
LOVE does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;
6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
LOVE does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
LOVE bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Greek meaning of "bears" all things - steÑgw - by covering to keep off something which threatens, to bear up against, hold out against, and so endure, bear, forbear
8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. Love never faileth ... As in the RSV, "Love never ends."
Greek-- meÑrov - For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
- in part, partly, in a measure, to some degree, as respects a part, severally, individually
10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
For now we see as through an obscure thing. Ahhh, but then we shall see things clearly and face to face. Like in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
